Charts covering a period of about five days have been calculated for the
month of August 2003 and generally show mixed weather at the start of the month, turning to warm, dry and sunny weather in the middle of the month and finishing off with cooler, wet weather at the end. 1st to 2nd August 2003 LP south of Iceland extends its influence eastwards towards Scandinavia. However, winds are still strong off NW Scotland. Azores HP stretches NEwards into S Ireland and S England. LP activity remains well to the W of Ireland. Unsettled weather expected to the N and W of Britain with dryer weather to the S of the country. 3rd to 7th August HP dominates S Britain as HP stretches from the Azores to Poland. LP still remains to S of Iceland and over Scandinavia. Southern half of Britain will be dry, unsettled weather in N and NW. 8th to 12th August A build-up of HP from Biscay stretching Nward over Britain to E Iceland. A large LP remains to SW of Iceland and another LP affects S Scandinavia. Some fronts could reach W Scotland during the period. Weather over most of Britain will be dry and sunny. With temperatures slowly rising it will be warmer in the W and SW of the country, but it will be cooler on the E coast. 13th to 16th August HP sits over SE England. Fronts and unsettled weather will reach W Scotland and W Ireland during the period. Except for W Scotland and W Ireland, weather will be warm, dry and sunny. Temperatures will continue to rise over most of the country. 17th to 21st August HP remains over central Europe. Britain is in the warm SEly airstream. However, LPs are approaching from the Atlantic. An LP can be expected to the S of Iceland. and another LP drifts into SW of Ireland and the Biscay area. A slow breakdown of the fine weather can be expected from the W and SW as rain and thunder usher in a cooler airstream. 22nd to 15th August. LP over Iceland with a trough stretching SEwards into SE England. Cooler W winds push into Ireland and W Britain. A mixture of sunshine and showers can be expected over the S and SW of the country as fronts and ridges of HP enter the SW. Heavy rain showers can be expected over the mainland from NW to SE of the country. 26th to 31st August LPs drift across the N of the country from W to E into SW Scandinavia. A small ridge brings an improvement in the weather to S Ireland and the SW of Britain. but there is much rain over the rest of the country, especially in the NE and SE of Britain. Generally speaking the weather will be miserable and cool. Do other long-rangers agree with the findings? Comments from Long-rangers welcome. Cheers, Keith |
