03496 Hemsby is not in the latest edition of the WMO list of synoptic
stations http://www.wmo.ch/web/www/ois/volume-a/vola-home.htm
ftp://www.wmo.ch/wmo-ddbs/Pub9volA040126.flatfile

Thanks for drawing attention to this site, Joe. Very interesting.

One or two strange places in the list of "populated locations" in the UK
though: Braunschweig and Gifhorn (which are in Germany), Plimut and ...
Danbury.

The German sites seem to have become misplaced in the UK list because of a
mistake in their longitude - given as 1°32'E and 1°33'E instead of 10°32'E
and 10°33'E.

.... I'm pretty sure that the ghost of Hembsy radio-sonde has not arisen!
I note that some of the other stations listed have 'adjacent' data
points; for example, for Slough (!) they are using Heathrow: not too far
away.

Thanks for your help.

I'm trying to work out where the data does come from. I can rule out Norwich
and Coltishall, but the search goes on.

I think it's just that they haven't updated their basic information ... I
see
they are still using 03534 for Birmingham airport which closed as a
SYNOP station 3 or 4 years ago. The observation on the Hemsby
page is probably Coltishall (03495), and for Birmingham it's
undoubtedly Coleshill (03535).

Hi Philip

Its not Coltishall (or any other local station I can find) as the data does
not match the Coltishall data available here
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/res...imvisgsod.html

The search goes on!

Needless to say, the UK is listed. Nearly all the Countries listed are
European.

Yes, every time. It provides daily archive data back to 1994 around the
world. Any reason why I'm seeing it, if no one else is?!
