uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

Default An interesting night ahead

Below is the forecast on the BBC web site for tonight and I could not
resist sharing it with you. A good few people coming out of the pubs and
clubs will probably feel they have had one too many if the forecast is
correct.

Friday night
Many areas dry with sunny periods. Cloudy in the northern Isles with patchy
rain, and rather cloudy in the southwest with rain or sleet, perhaps a
moderate burst in places. Feeling bitterly cold in the south.

This is probably as good a time as any time to lighten proceedings (except for
Biblical literalists) as I remind you of one of the most enduring of internet
urban myths/legends.

Immanuel Velikovsky tried to explain it (and many other Biblical miracles)
"scientifically" in his book "Worlds in Collision".

This caused quite a stir in scientific circles at the time, as Velikovsky was
not an astronomer. Recent examples of scientists from one discipline
pronouncing in another are cold fusion and panspermia.
