Default British Isles Outlook - 1st to 10th March 2004

The general pressure situation for the period 1st to 10th March 2004 has
LP to the N of the country to parts of Scandinavia, so that generally
W winds blow across Scotland Over the southern half of the country
winds are expected to be generally light and variable as the Azores HP
extends a small ridge to just off SW England. A weak belt of HP
stretches from East Anglia across the North Sea towards N Germany. A
weak ridge stretches from off Northern Ireland to S Greenland. A LP area
lies near Biscay to S France with the possibility of generally NE or E
winds near W France and the Channel coasts.

It is expected to be generally dryer in central and southern areas of
the country but more showers are expected over Scotland in the
generally W'erly winds.

London's temperature trend is unsteady from 1st to about 3rd but
then rises to about 5th,. the curve then falls to about 7th, rises to
about 8th, then falls to the end of the period. Small cold dips in the
curve are expected near 1st, 3rd and 7th. Small warm peaks are expected
near 2nd, 5th and 8th. The ground minimum is expected to be low on 3rd
falling to its lowest point on 4th, then rising on 5th.

Glasgow's temperature trend shows a rise from 1st to about 5th then a
small drop near the 6th and 7th before rising again to about 9th,
then falling on the last day of the period. Small cold dips in the
curve are expected near 6th and 7th and 10th. Small warm peaks are
expected near 5th and 9th.

Strong wind days are expected near 1st March - off SW England ( small
wave approaching) near 2nd March - N and W Scotland and SW
Norway (Iceland LP with trough to SW Norway) near 3rd March - NW
Scotland (LP to N of Scotland) also W Biscay (LP area W France)
near 4th March - W Scotland (LP to NW of Scotland) near 6th March
- Brittany (LP moving away E'wards) near 7th and 8th March - off
SW Britain. (LP coming into W of country) near 9th March -
Biscay and W of Ireland ( Wave off SW England) near 10th March -
North Sea and SW England (front side and backside of depression over
Britain)

General run of weather over the period starts with a belt of LP running
W/E across the top of Scotland and a wave coming into SW'ern areas.
The Azores HP drifts E'wards along the Channel on 2nd At the same
time, an area of LP develops over Spain and SW France and lies near
Biscay on 3rd. On 4th, LP continues to cover an area off NW Scotland
bringing a secondary into the SW of the country on 5th. The secondary
crosses the country and lies in the North Sea on the 6th with HP coming
behind it into SW districts. A new LP approaches W'ern areas from the
Atlantic on 7th with a small ridge of the Azores HP into the North
Sea. The LP moves into the country on 8th pushing the North Sea HP
into the continent. As HP builds up N/S over the Atlantic just W of
Ireland. on 9th, LP develops once again near Biscay and the SW of
Britain and moves NE'wards to cover the country on 10th.

This period of weather follows the general, extensive, HP situations we
had at the end of February. In this present period, the HP-area
stretches more or less E-W across Europe. But the signs are already
there that once again LP approaches the NW of the country and the
ensuing mild, cyclonic SW winds will be in force for the next period

This is a shorter version of the 'Outlook', but I think, still
sufficient detail for those interested.

Cheers, Keith
