Default Helm Bar

Hi,

I am trying to get some data on easterly wave from the Pennines for gliding
purposes. What I am really looking for is days when it occurred so I can
look at satellite pictures and determine the precise location of the Helm
Bar.

Jack

Will this help...?

Go to www.getmapping.co.uk

They supply high-resolution pictures of any part of the UK.
Just type in your postcode in the search field to see a low-resolution
preview.

Thanks, but I already knew about that. I have a very reasonable idea where
the wave bar lies, but I want to be able to reconcile dates and satpics to
get a more accurate idea of the exact orientation and position of the wave.

Using a postcode is a bit chicken and egg. I don't know what postcodes are
relevant until I know where to look!

Eh??? Course not. You drink *after* flying. Jack just wants to be sure to
land in the right place.

Hadn't you heard of the "Helm Bar"? It's in small village in the Eden
Valley and I think it's owned by 'Scottish and Newcastle'.

Hi,

How often does the Helm Bar occurs in the daytime (or nightime) with
no upper cloud cover? Just a thought. The small number of times I
saw it (during my time working on Great Dun Fell and staying in
Dufton), - AFAIR it was always fairly grey above.

I know there are others out there who know far more than I about the
Helm wind and will correct me.

I have now put some details on my gliding website together with a link to an
aeronautical map showing approximate location of the wave bar. But we are
trying to tie down the location more precisely so we can negotiate with Air
Traffic Control for the appropriate upper airspace slot. (Gliders have GPS
and can navigate very precisely nowadays)

This web page is not normally as crowded as this example, but the gliding
soaring season hasn't really started yet and this is more in the nature of
keeping my hand in with the daily forecasts.

One of the "major links" at top left takes you to my weather links page.

Surely the position varies depending on at least the strength of the
easterly and it's temperature relative to that in the Eden Valley.
Just my thoughts.

I think I got some pictures of it the other day. At least there was
the cloud cap along the ridge a clear gap and then well defined line
of cloud running parrallel to the ridge a few miles away. I'll see if
I can find them. However there was no real Helm blowing as I drove
through Melmerby and up to Hartside.
