From the Gower climatological station (as reported monthly in Weather Log in
Weather). Level depth of snow measured at 0900h this morning was 10-12cm. This was the greatest depth here since 1985 when a similar depth was reported (but in a longer, colder spell), just beating Feb. 1991. This was from the heavy showers ovnt last night - nothing to do with the further band of snow that moved south rather more widely this afternoon. 85m. ASL and within sight of the coast. I notice also that the Aberystwyth promenade webcam (on the BBC Wales webcams pages) is showing plenty of snow under the streetlights. At least these heavy showers in an unstable NNW'ly seem to be better forecast these days - at one time forecasters used to seem to stress the E coast in these situations, fine for a N'ly, silly for a NNW'ly. and I'm not attacking forecasters at all - praise where praise is due today, in a tricky situation. Julian Mayes, West Molesey, Surrey. (and occasional Gower met. observer) |
