Default Today's model interpretation (30/07/03)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output, for noon (GMT) on Sunday. Issued
0558z, 30/07/03.

ECMWF: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Recm1201.html
A ridge covers Wales, Ireland and SW England, with northerlies for England
and westerlies for Scotland. The high moves over the UK at T+144, with light
winds for all. The high builds over the southern North Sea at T+168, with
light easterlies and southerlies over the UK.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html
Scotland and Ireland lie under a southerly flow as a result of high pressure
over the North Sea, England and Wales. The high builds over the North Sea at
T+144, with easterlies for much of England and southerlies elsewhere.

GFS:

..gif
High pressure and light winds cover the UK. The high builds at T+120, with
easterlies for much of England and Wales and southerlies elsewhere. 850hPa
temperatues range from +5C over northern Scotland to +12C over SE England.
The high continues building at T+144, bringing light winds for all.
Easterlies and southerlies cover the UK at T+168 as the high builds to the
east of Scotland. There's little change on day 8, but by day 9 the high
declines slowly in situ, with light winds across the UK. The high becomes
elongated on day 10, eith easterlies over southern areas and westerlies for
the far north of Scotland.

GEM: http://meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120_e.html
The Canadian run shows a high over the North Sea, leading to easterlies for
southern and central England, as well as Wales. The rest of the UK lies
under southerlies. The high settles over southern Norway at T+144 and stays
there out to day 9, with easterlies and southerlies covering the UK
throughout. Finally, the high moves slowly eastwards on day 10, leaving the
UK under a col.

JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html
Scotland and Northern Ireland lie under westerlies, with light winds
elsewhere due to a ridge over England and Wales. 850hPa temperatures range
from +4C over NW Scotland to +11C over southern England.

MM5: http://rain.mmm.ucar.edu/mm5/plots/n...6hrn.hr120.gif
The mesoscale run shows a large high over Scandinavia, with a ridge over the
UK bringing light winds to most.

In summary, the runs today suggest that a prolonged warm (if not hot) and
settled spell is on the way, with high pressure over the UK (GFS) or to the
east/NE (Canadian) for the best part of a week. If the high does settle to
the east or NE, though, Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to see more
in the way of cloud. The ECM and MetO runs also keep high pressure
dominating the UK from T+120 out to T+144/T+168, so there's good agreement
today.
