GENERALLY COOLER WINDS DURING THE PERIOD. SHOWERS, ESPECIALLY IN
THE NORTH AND WEST. WINDS GENERALLY NW TO W.

The general pressure situation for the period 11th to 20th April 2004
shows a trough extending SE'wards from a LP area near Iceland. The
cooler winds on its W side affect mostly the W side of the country.
There are expected to be many showers, especially in the N and W of the
country. There is also a threat of bad weather coming into the SW. The
influence of HP early on in the period will be replaced by cyclonic
conditions later on.

Temperatures over Britain are influenced by the cool NW winds so that
the axis of a trough in the isotherms should fall generally N to S down
the Irish Sea Towards the end of the period warmer air could move
northwards along the near continent and the E North Sea area.

Strong wind days are expected near 12th - SW Britain, (small wave comes
into the SW of the country). near 15th - SW Britain, (small secondary
coming into the SW of the country).
near 16th - E and NE Britain, (LP moving away E'wards from E
Scotland). near 17th - NE Britain, (LP approaching N Scotland).
near 19th - W and SW Britain, ( small LP approaching SW Britain).
near 20th - SW Britain, (LP covers SW Britain). .

The run of weather over the period starts on 11th, with N and NW
winds over Scotland as an area of LP to the N and NE of Scotland moves
slowly away E'wards. Behind it, to the NW and SW of Ireland, some
disturbances move towards the British Isles. These disturbances are
embedded in a large area of HP over the near Atlantic which is moving
towards Britain. Winds are generally cool from the NW across the
country. In the SE of England and to the SW of the country, mainly dry
conditions prevail. However, a belt of showers stretches from
Scotland, down the N of England to Wales and the SW of England.
On 12th, an area of HP remains over the near Atlantic with a belt of
HP coming towards Biscay. A LP area near S Iceland has a trough
stretching S and SE towards S England. A secondary LP seems to be
approaching SW England from the Atlantic. Cool NW winds flow to the NW
and W of Ireland as relatively milder S to SW winds drift up the
mainland towards NE Scotland. Areas of rain and showers cover S
Ireland and the SW of the country. Dryer conditions are to be found
over Scotland and the extreme SE of England.
On 13th, a large area of HP spreads into Ireland, Wales and the W of
England. The remaining segment of LP leaves the E of Scotland. Winds
over the country are NW and mostly light except over E Scotland.
Although cooler conditions are to be found in the N and W of the
country, Warmer areas will be found in the E and SE of the country.
Dry areas will be found in the W and trailing fronts will bring rain
and showers to SE England.
On 14th, a weak belt of HP runs WSW to ENE across the centre of
Britain. A LP area advances into Scotland moving only slowly
E'wards. A second LP - only a small one this time - appears to be
near the Channel. Cool NW winds approach NW Scotland spreading
S'wards into England. Warmer conditions can be found over the North
Sea. Wet conditions are expected over N and NW Scotland and over the
Channel. Dryer weather should be found in central areas of Britain
where the HP belt exists.
On 15th, LP from the N, still shows its face over Scotland. And HP
comes close to Britain in the W, SW and S coastal areas. A small
disturbance in the Channel affects mainly the S English coast. The cool
NW winds bringing cool conditions from W Scotland down to S England
are well established. In the W and NW of the country conditions are
expected to be dry, but in the S and SE of England rain and showers are
likely.
On 16th, a flat ridge enters the SW of England. A HP area to the N
and NE of Scotland moves slowly E'wards. A large depression moves
E'wards in the Atlantic towards NW Scotland. Cool NW winds flow into
the NW of Britain as milder air flows near E Scotland. A belt of
rain and showers stretches from W Scotland down to Wales and central
England. Dryer conditions exist in the S of England.
On 17th, a large depression sits to the N of Scotland with a small
disturbance near the SE coast of England. Mild SW winds are drawn up
the North Sea and cool NW to W winds flow down the W side of the
country. Most of Britain will have rainy and showery weather except
the extreme S coast which will be somewhat dryer.
On 18th, a medium sized LP exists to the N and NW of Scotland and an
area of HP to the SW of the country has a thin wedge extending
NE'wards across the S halfof England to the North Sea. A small
depression is expected in the S North Sea. Cool NW to W winds come in
across W Scotland and flow towards the NE coast of England. Milder
WSW winds flow towards Ireland. Rain and showers cover the northern
half of the country and dry weather can be expected in the SW.
On 19th, a HP area lies to the W of Ireland so that cool NW to N winds
flow across the country. Small LPs embeded in the wind near NW
Scotland and SW England cause wet conditions along the W coastal areas
of the country and over the most of Scotland.
On 20th, a medium sized LP lies over SW England and the S of Ireland.
Another depression exists to the N and NW of Scotland. Cooler air is
drawn down the W coast of Scotland towards the S of Ireland. Relatively
milder air flows from the S coast of England up towards the NE coast
of England. It will be dry over the NW and SE areas of Britain. The
most rain will fall over SW England and S Ireland.

The main theme of this period appears to be the cool N or NW winds
caused be the presence of the LP near N Scotland and the HP over the
near Atlantic.

The next 10-day period looks to be a a return to generally moist and
mild SW winds.

Cheers, Keith
