Hi, Nigel,

I was just about to post when I read yours. TS arrived here 1930GMTand
it's still going on (20Z). Totally unexpected as the forecast was for a
dry evening, but a nice surprise nevertheless! It seems to be centred
around Darlington atm.

It has all the characteristics of a front passing through. Squall up to
30mph and wind veering from SE to SW with temp falling a couple of
degrees to 6C. Heavy rain for a short while, about 2mm.

ATB,

Just passed over Ferryhill about 10 mins ago c. 9.20 pm. Short burst of
heavy rain, then pushed off to the North East. Close enough to make me
unplug the modem.

My sister phoned me about half an hour ago to talk about it, and as she was on
the phone the mains power went off for about 20 seconds.

She's half way between Northallerton & Darlington...

There's been some stunning flashes, a friend on the hill tops above
Catterick's not lost his power, and he's normally one of the first !?

Just taken a look at the www.ukstorms.com site which used to have a very easy
to follow lightning data track for the UK and I didn't see any activity
There's quite a bit shown on
http://meteocentre.com/lightning/map...&map=AEuropeNW
though...
According to http://www.meto.gov.uk/weather/europ...index.html#top
there's been some real deluges, but there's only been a little shower here and
now totally clear...

Seems to have been moving NE...

Well I'm in Darlington. Had no powercuts although the lights has flashed
off and on a few times and street lights went off for a few seconds. Just
got my cable service back, looks as though that was affected more than
anything.

Very nice storm it was too, some amazing flashes and some of the thunder was
extremely loud. Loved it!

The lights have been going mad here in Wallsend, i've seen the occasional
flash of sheet lightning to my south / southwest.

Completely Unexpected!

I got almost hit with another one about 2200! I was out observing on the
tops of the Yorkshire Wolds, between Market Weighton and Beverley, with a
few of the Astronomical Society, when we started seeing flashes, high up in
the clouds to the west at about 2100.

I thought nothing of it, but 20 mins later it was clear it was getting
closer, so we started to make plans to leave our exposed hill top location.
As the flashes appeared to be getting closer by 2140, I said "**** it! I'm
not going to get caught in this!!" So we quickly stashed all the stuff away,
and at the first drops of rain, we all drove away like rally drivers down
this narrow road. Lightning began to scare me cos it was almost all around
us, on the times it flashed but we were off the hill anyway. A few mins
later, the heavens opened and it was heavy enough to SERIOUSLY reduce
visibility on the A1079. As we reached Bishop Burton, the roads were dry!
Ain't it always the case....?

I checked the 2200 radar pic when I got home, and sure enough there was a
tiny intense echo, just above where I had been. Does anyone have any sferics
from that time?
