APART FROM A PASSING RIDGE ON TWO OCCASIONS - LOW PRESSURE, COOL
WINDS AND MANY SHOWERS DOMINATE THE WEATHER

The general pressure situation for the period 21st to 30th April shows
an area of LP near Iceland with a trough SE'wards to S England. On the
W side of Britain, generally cool W to NW winds flow down the trough,
whereas slightly milder S winds flow up the North Sea. There are
generally a lot of showers attached to this weather situation, only the
extreme SE of England can expect generally dryer weather. This weather
pattern is broken up by two ridges of HP crossing the country on
21st/22nd and 26th April.

According to the temperature charts, the days on which mild air sweeps
across the country from SW to NE is near 23rd and also 28th. On most
other days, cool NW winds account for average temperatures, but
slightly below average in the W and NW.

Strong wind days are expected near 25th, off SW England as a small LP
enters the Channel. Also on 28th over Scotland and N Ireland and the
SW of England, caused by a large LP near Scotland and a small LP coming
into the Channel.

The run of weather over the period starts on 21st with LP leaving the
E coast of England and a medium sized ridge of HP, (the first of two
during this period), stretching N/S, crossing the mainland of
Britain from W to E. To the W, LP moves E'wards in the Atlantic
towards W and NW Scotland. Winds are cool N or NW in the E of the
country, light and variable in the centre, and mild SW in the W of
the country. A high humidity early-on in the S and SW of England
suggests that the fronts of the Atlantic LP are entering the country.
Rainy areas are expected to be over N Ireland, W England and W Scotland
as well as the extreme SE of England.
On 22nd, the axis of the HP ridge is now over the extreme SE of England
and is moving E'wards into the North Sea. Cyclonically curved isobars
of the Atlantic LP are already over Scotland and into Wales. Mild SW
winds cover Ireland and Scotland early-on and these spread slowly
E'wards and SE'wards across the country. Wet weather covers Scotland
and the W and SW districts of England at first, and this moves a little
further E'wards during the day.
On 23rd, the HP ridge has flattened and lies over the SE of England,
the Channel and a part of France. The Atlantic LP has moved towards the
NW of Scotland. Mild SW winds cover the country. High humidity
across Britain brings heavy showers of rain to most areas. Only the S
and SE coastal areas can expect dryer conditions.
On 24th, LP lies to the NW of Scotland and a belt of LP stretches
E'wards towards the SW of Norway. A wave near SW'ern areas is moving
into the Channel, and behind it, over the near Atlantic, a flat ridge of
HP hardly moves. A cool W or WNW wind enters the country from W
Scotland and N Ireland. High humidity-counts down the centre of the
country bring many showers to these areas. Some dry spells are
expected later in the SW of the country.
On 25th, a LP area lies to the N and NW of Scotland with a trough
stretching SE'wards to a small LP near S England. Cool NW winds flow
down the W side of the country as an area of HP approaches from the
near Atlantic. High humidty-counts over the central and S areas of
Britain mean a number of rain showers for these areas.
On 26th, the 2nd HP ridge which was over the Atlantic yesterday is now
stretching from SW Britain to Scotland and W France. Winds are light
and variable, but milder SW winds come into the SW and W of the
country. With dry conditions over the SE, rain showers come into N
Ireland and W Scotland later.
On 27th, although the HP area has moved off into the near continent, it
still affects the E'tern side of the country. A LP area lies to the
NW of the country, affecting W Scotland and NW and W Ireland. To the
S of the LP area, a small secondarey depression is moving E'ward
towards S Ireland. Warm and moist SW'ly winds cover the W half of the
country and spread slowly E'ward.
On 28th, a deep LP area just to the NW of Scotland affects most of the
country with warm and moist SW to W winds. Only the extreme SE of the
country has a flat HP area which brings dryer conditions to this part.
There may be some strong winds over the N of Britain. Rain can be
expected over the N and along the W side of Britain.
On 29th, the large LP lies almost over NW Scotland with a belt of LP
stretching E'wards towards SW Norway. A small wave into the Channel is
possible. Winds will be W over most of the country, but veering cool NW
in the NW of Britain later. Rain and showers are expected to cover the E
side of the country as dryer conditions spread into W'ern areas later.
On 30th, the LP area to the N of Scotland is moving slowly E'wards.
The small secondary of yesterday has moved E'wards along the Channel
into France. And another LP near N Ireland is expected to move into
Britain. As HP builds up over the near Atlantic, cool NW winds flow
down the W side of the country. Rain and showers over NW and SW areas
of the country will move slowly E'wards.

For the first few days of May we can expect a build-up of anticyclonic
weather over Britain up to the 3rd, but then an LP with a secondary
approaches western areas on 5th. (See Bank Holiday Forecast)

Cheers, Keith
