Default [WR] Bracknell/Good Friday: fine start ... shame about the stratus!

At 0500Z, SKC, vis 2 to 3km, BR (mist) and a lovely day in prospect,
after overnight min = +0.6degC, grass min -1.7degC.

At 0645Z, OVC ST, vis 1200-1500m, VCFG, as the wind just popped up to
Bft 1 or 2, from calm/near calm.

Now (0730Z): OAT = 2.5degC, RH = 95%, vis still ~ 1200m, but no VCFG as
far as I can detect - and the stratus has some 'light and shade' to it,
so hopefully not too thick and won't hang about too long.

Martin.

Dont know if Jon is around but the TAFs yesterday were spot on:

showing the limit of the fog to the North of London which is evident from
this mornings reports.

As you say, looks like a fine and possibly best day of the Easter break in
the SE. This warm front is coming south at walking pace...

Hi Phil,
cloud from this warm front slowly moving in from the North west after a
surprisingly chilly clear night.
Min temperature 2.1° C

best regards,

Default [WR] Bracknell/Good Friday: ... on the up

.... now (0830Z):

1 okta St (was 7 oktas about 15 mins ago)
5 oktas Sc - thin / well-broken
some Ci above.

Vis picking up (at least 6km, could be more), OAT now up to 5.1degC
(from the 2.5 of first report), as sun is fitfully shining strongly now.
A little very shallow/low-base Cu over Bracknell (could be as low as
800ft base ... i.e. similar to the St).

Martin.

Don't come to North East Cumbria

Persistant drizzle since dawn 1.0mm, temps +6c and visibility code 3/4 -
certainly not a day for the fells !

I started the ball rolling Phil at 0430Z with the 1206. At that stage fog
looked a very low PROB at Heathrow with Luton the most likely.

Hmm, I can imagine. Actually reminds me of an autumn morning while I was at
Boscombe Down. I 'confidently' did the fast jet brief just after dawn in
near CAVOK conditions, about an hour later thick fog, much to my dismay :-P

.... these features are a real pain to forecast. The best I reckon we'll
ever be able to do is to outline the risk rather than explicitly
forecast post-dawn fog. As posted earlier, I could seen FG for a short
time in the direction of Easthampstead School / Park & Wildridings (for
those that know the area - not too far to the north), but here, in Gt.
Hollands/Tawfield, vis. no worse than 1000m at any time. And the fog
phase lasted less than 15 mins.

Some sort of micro-scale model linked to a network of local sensors
might give 30-45mins warning - expensive, and it will be a fine
judgement whether it is economically viable: Heathrow and similar
high-volume airports could probably justify though.

Martin.
