At 04:48 is VERY dramatic at the moment! Huge band of rain, some very heavy
clumps included. A bit daunting sat here in S.Kent. Batten down the hatches
everyone!

........ it's now 06:16 and it's still showing the 05:00 image. When does
this thing update?

Well it's just got to West Sussex heading East (06:30 radar) and
moderate rain outside here (near Portsmouth) . The heavy stuff you saw
was mostly over the Welsh mountains and Pennines. I wouldn't worry too
much, it'll be mostly moderate rain when it gets to Kent (albeit
lasting quite a long time).

Hi Howard,

Some significant orographic enhancement of the cold front occurred over
higher, western parts, clearly shown on the radar animations. The
subsequent
descent shows a weakening of the front over the Birmingham area 04Z - 07Z
:

06Z Larkhill ascent shows copious amounts of moisture and a low level jet
ahead of the cold front -

Some sharp showers today and for the next few days, already thunder heard
here with hail.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, I do not subscribe to Avbrief
and the link is not available to me, so I will go with your description.
I could see the second link but it is beyond my meteorological
knowledge. What does the funnel shape represent, please, and is it
horizontal or vertical (assuming it represents a physical feature)?

Hi Howard,

I have saved the radar animation if you would like me to send it to you ?
I can't find a valid e-mail address though for you.

The link I posted was a Skew-T diagram and upon it is plotted a profile of
the atmosphere. It shows dew point, air temperature and wind speed and
gives you an idea of the structure of the atmosphere. If you wish to read
more about them then look here -
