Default awaiting the onslaught (central Lowlands)

I think some areas of the central lowlands will have taken a hammering

from
this one, and we've got off lightly for a change in Wishaw.

Got hammered here in Carluke (5 miles SE of you) Visibility was down to
1000m for a time in the heaviest rain, and the temperature fell from 22C to
12C in around 1 hour.

Total fall 28.0 mm.

Now turning very stratussy/misty with the moors to the NE in fog.

Rain intensified somewhat again, lightning still continues and thunder

Heard from a friend that the town of Bellshill (5 miles west of here) had
hail much larger than marbles for a time.
Also about half a mile along the road from here there is a vacated bus
straddling the road strangely. Don't see any signs of damage, or anyone
around to ask. Lightning strike or simple breakdown (probably the latter)?
Mobile networks are down also.

It remained warm and dry all day in Troon!

Note to self: when I retire, buy a big house up in Scotland with a glass
conservatory... I'd have loved watching that come and go!

I seem to recall from Met Office statistics that the further north and west you
go in Britain, the lower the average incidence of thunderstorms. So if it's
spectacular stuff you're after, maybe Scotland isn't the best place to move to
g even if today's sounded incredible. We didn't have anything like that (Moray
Firth) - muggy all day, with some sunny spells, but a north-easterly breeze, and
it's drizzling now.

Still feel as though we're fairly near the edge of something far more
special.
Closest strike, still around a mile away. But the lightning is literally
everywhere and all forms of it.

Including ball lightning?

Correction. Haven't heard reports of ball lightning from yesterday.
But that springs to mind something I'd long since forgotten about...
Way back in 1990, unsure of the date - but I do remember it was the evening
that the world cup kicked off (Italia '90) with Argentina V's Cameroon.
During the game our TV screen flickered for a few seconds and then several
seconds later there was some thunder....
....... Next day in the newspapers there was a reported incident of ball
lightning in the nearby town of Belshill, with several eye witness accounts.
I believe the "ball" was seen to travel down a street hitting a few cars on
route. The rest of the story has gone from my memory - I was only 16 at the
time.
I wonder if anyone has more info on this event?
Alex.

And shortly after I wrote that the fireworks started. Quite an
impressive show, but nowhere near as spectacular as the one Alex
experienced. The power went off for 3 hours, and the ISDN cards in the
exchange were destroyed, resulting in me being offline for over 48 hours.
