Default Cold in the Valley

Air min in the Chipstead Valley last night 0.0C which does not constitute an
air frost as it has to be -0.1C but nonetheless still a chill in the air at
dawn. In Coulsdon the min was 2.9C. Usually there is more of a difference
but there was a noticeable wind until quite late and thus air in valley was
stirred up somewhat.
With regards to Bjorn Sorheim's post re cold air moving south over Europe it
has been snowing in the area of Austria I monitor near Lunz where is a
remarkable frost hollow it has been snowing most of the day at a height of
1600 metres. It was around minus 3C at midday. A real winter wonderland.
Talking of winter wonderland I wonder if the person who posted an excellent
picture of snow drifts on a lonely road at the end of February this year on
the Yorkshire Moors could contact me. It has a tree on the left hand side of
the road.

The daily report of the Free University of Berlin
http://www.met.fu-berlin.de/deutsch/...etterlage.html notes that snow
has fallen in central Germany above about 800 m. The Brocken in the Harz
mountains at 1142 m reported 4 cm snow this morning as did the Fichtelberg
in Saxony at 1214 m.

Photos of snow on the Brocken taken by Karel Holvoet of the Belgian
(Flemish) Weather Group who spent the weekend there

He reports snow cover above 700 m asl and snowstorms on the top of the
mountain.
