Leeming 21.6°C.

Hi, Colin,

Many thanks, as usual, for the info. Do you suspect the Leeming figure
is high? Only 14.9C here in Copley and a SSE flow would not give a fohn
effect in The Vale of York.

Ken, this is bizarre. As far as I can tell, the original SYNOP gave
a
max of 17.4ºC, but a "correction" was subsequently transmitted
changing the max to 21.6ºC which was confirmed at 2100 by
the climat. report (hence its appearance in the various lists).

21.6ºC is manifestly wrong; 17.4ºC is clearly much righter ... and
I'm surprised there was no human intervention to correct the
"correction". I cannot for the life of me figure out where that
21.6 came from.

We're fortunate here in that Leeming has three other
observing sites within a stone's throw, and their maxes on
Friday we 17.6, 18.4 and 18.1.

Hi, Philip,

Thanks for that. As you say, bizarre. I only hope that the info they
feed into their Tornado fighters is more accurate, as they are just
missing Copley at the moment. A Harrier did come down in a field two
miles away a few years ago, though!

Best wishes,

OT but on thursday night I was lying in bed just before midnight and what
sounded like a fighter plane came very low over our house heading west, it
obviously then had to climb steeply to get over Haytor Down at 400m. I must
confess for a few seconds I wondered if it was going to hit us.

situations
Farsley Leeds max 17.5 C. So I was a bit surprised at this max.

Thanks to Ken for pointing this out and to Philip for explaining what
happened.

It was late in the evening and the Leeming figure did not strike me as odd
at the time. Two other places well away from southern England - Kinloss
20.8°C and Lossiemouth 21.0°C - were also in the list of highest maxima.

I was writing with the memory of a fine and sunny day in Brussels in my
mind - to Ken under the cloudy northern English skies the discrepancy was no
doubt only too obvious !
