uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

The Atlantic sea surface temperature annomaly seems to have developed
a new phase. A large area of -ve over the eastern side whereas a large stretch of +ve has developed west of Ibearia. Of course above 60N it is still majorly +ve. Simon Sheaf Sheffield South Yorkshire |

Simon Sheaf Sheffield South Yorkshire A good point, but I think it is worth while giving a link to an appropriate web page if you are going to make a point like that. So here is a link to the US Navt's global sea surface temperature anomally map which is updated twice daily; https://152.80.49.210/products/OTIS/...sstanomaly.gif FWIIW the sub tropical SST anomaly seems to suggest a Walker Circulation type of pattern, with zonal alternative highs and lows (of temperature anomally but also pressure.) Anyone else care to comment? Cheers, Alastair. |

Simon Sheaf Sheffield South Yorkshire Scratch the sea surface and you'll find a reactionary. Don't worry Simon its just a phase you're going through. Why in ten years time, as I've already pointed out to Alastair, you'll still be pitching your deckchair in the same spot on Morecambe sea front. You probably think I'm taking the (sea level) rise? It wasn't there to start with. Hey! don't shoot the messenger. |

I hope the incoherent attamps at wit you post are "just a phase". |

Of course above 60N it is still majorly +ve. Simon Sheaf Sheffield South Yorkshire What I had thought Simon is how broadly similar it is to the same time last year i.e. cold and warm anomalies in much the same positions: https://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/products/...sstanomaly.gif except for the fact that the +ve anomaly to the far north (the edge of the summer melting ice?) is even greater and over a wider area than last year except in Baffin Bay to the W of Greenland. I have no real knowledge of the relations between spot SST's and relative seasonal changes but taking into account that last year saw the second lowest amount of ice left at the Sept minimum point (the record lowest being in 2002 - see https://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/products/...sstanomaly.gif for this time of that year) then what does it hold for later in the year? Somewhat concerning I would think. -- Pete Please take my dog out twice to e-mail --------------------------------------------------------------- The views expressed above are entirely those of the writer and do not represent the views, policy or understanding of any other person or official body. --------------------------------------------------------------- |
