Default German tornado

Hi,

Anyone know anything more about the German tornado that ripped through a
village pretty much destroying it? Was it from a supercell?

Simon

"Freak tornado wreaks havoc in eastern Germany
24 Jun 2004 16:51:48 GMT

BERLIN, June 24 (Reuters) - A rare tornado tore through two small villages in
eastern Germany, wrecking houses and leaving hundreds of people without power
while causing millions of euros worth of damage, authorities said on Thursday.

The tornado ripped off roofs and blew out doors and windows, damaging almost
three quarters of the buildings in Micheln and half in neighbouring Trebbichau,
the interior ministry in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt said.

A total of 275 buildings suffered substantial damage in the winds late on
Wednesday, while some 800 people were left with no electricity or functioning
telephone lines, a spokesman for the ministry said. Six houses were no longer
inhabitable, he added.

Six people were injured, one seriously.

Some 250 police and firemen were called in to help secure homes and clean up,
the spokesman added."

The link comes from Thomas Sävert's German weather newsletter which I have
just received. He says that the tornado was probably one of the most
severe seen in Germany in recent decades.

The report reads:

"On Wednesday 23 June 2004, behind the fronts of an unusually vigorous
Atlantic depression centred over England, widespread showers and
thunderstorms developed over a large part of Germany in a warm and humid SW
airstream. There were reports of several probable tornadoes, including a
more powerful tornado in (the state of) Saxony-Anhalt. This tornado
occurred around 19.00 to the N/NW of Köthen (midway between Magdeburg and
Leipzig). In Micheln people were injured and there was considerable
damage. According to reports it seems to have been comparable with the
tornado in Acht in June 2002 - perhaps even worse.

On the left you see photos of the tornado taken by Thomas Fritz, André
Soutschek and Thomas Gahler, and pictures of the damage taken by Jens
Fricke. Click on each of the photos to see further pictures by the same
photographer."

Maps showing location and track can be enlarged by clicking on them.

Links further down the page lead to reports in German on this event and
further photos.

Hi,

Wow, thanks guys!

I am surprised though why there hasn't been more of a fuss over this in this
group yet. That was some pretty amazing footage. Has any other European
tornado been captured so widely on camera?

I agree Simon,thanks Colin.
It's unusual I believe,to see the tornado and esp the mesocyclone structure so well defined. The
tornado and observers must have been v fortuitively placed in relation to the ppn core.
If the storm formed behind the cold front then it must have been a shallow topped or 'mini'
supercell. The presence of a well formed mesocyclone and the radar image look diagnostic of a
supercell at any rate,

We've been discussing this in TORRO...looking at the radar for the
time, I believe this storm formed along or just ahead of the cold
front. There was some evidence of a "hook" echo on radar, around the
time of the tornado. For what it's worth, I think it's a supercell
tornado - there is evidence of a rear flank downdraught on some of the
pictures.

Matthias Jaeneke - a former forecaster with the German Weather Service DWD -
has posted a superb analysis in German (illustrated with charts and radar
pictures) of events leading to the tornado on the Wetterzentrale Forum
http://www.wetter-zentrale.com/cgi-b...ames;read=5371
54

The Micheln tornado is estimated at F3 on the Fujita scale. Its effects
were even greater than those of the Acht tornado (Eifel area) in June 2002.
Wind speeds may have reached 300 km/hr.

Nearly 300 buildings in Micheln and the nearby village of Trebbichau were
damaged - some very badly. Five houses were rendered uninhabitable.
There were few injuries as the tornado struck at 18.45 local time (16.45
UTC) when most people were indoors eating their evening meal. A man and
his wife running for shelter as the tornado approached were thrown about 20
metres. The man was flung into a house wall and suffered injuries needing
hospital treatment.

Certainly 5 and perhaps 7 tornadoes were reported in Germany last Wednesday
23 June. A tornado of possibly F2 intensity occurred at Marne near
Dithmarschen in northern Germany (12.00 UTC). Weaker tornadoes were
reported on the island of Borkum (13.45 UTC), at Greetsiel near Emden (09.30
UTC) and Löningen-Menslage near Papenburg.

By 12.00 UTC on Wednesday the cold front had already reached the eastern
border of Germany in the north. Between 06.00 and 12.00 UTC 2 squall lines
with showers and thunderstorms developed in an area of strong wind shear
(wind strength increasing with height) behind the cold front. The Micheln
tornado developed on the first of these 2 squall lines. A supercell seems
to have been involved and a "hook" echo was visible on the radar.

Many photos here http://www.mkchilis.com/micheln/index.htm and here

The white blocks on some of the photos are expanded polystyrene. A factory
making insulating material was badly damaged by the tornado and a large
number of blocks of expanded polystyrene were scattered over a wide area -
some were found 8 km beyond the end of its track.
