Default "Bandwagons were us" or "Gwapple me gwapenuts"

OT but I can't resist it. That well known and loved environmentalist David
Bellamy has come out and ....wait for it.... .......attacked what he calls
"the great global warming scam". In an article in the Mail on Sunday Bellamy
rails against claims that "mans actions could ultimately destroy the planet"
as the 'biggest scam to hit the world'. He criticises the Government for
resorting to 'scare tactics' to justify its misguided crusade. He said 'It
is scientifically proven that 99 per cent of the worlds greenhouse emissions
come from natural sources over which we have no control. Yet millions are
being spent which will have no effect whatsoever on global warming. The
money should be spent on providing fresh water and sanitation to the most
deprived areas of the world'

Blimey! I would not have expected that from him off all people. I had a
further search on the net and found reference to a letter in New Scientist
titled "hooray for global warming" Alas as I am an 'anti-scientist' I
couldn't access the archives. There has also been a riposte to Sir david
houghton (chief government advisor to St Tony) in the daily Telegraph.

Now Saint Tony Blair of course has stated that "Global warming was the most
serious long term threat facing the planet' and has vowed to cut emmisions
by 15.2 per cent (I assume the .2 per cent is Prescott's two jags) by 2010!

Off course the Sainted Tony being a scientist by nature (unlike me according
to the great Chief Dancey with wolves) is a devout catholic (you know the
lot that still teach that the world was made in seven days).
Now he and his "new-age" wife Cherie , recently went through a rebirthing
ceremony in Mexico. Apparently they rubbed lots of mud, fruit and vegetables
into each others bodies. Well all I can say is, that before wicked humans
entered the industrial age it was common for folk to carry out a very
similar activity; it was called the "Stocks and Pillories"!

I now await for those methane producing human stools, to hit the
wind-turbines.

I saw that Lawrence. Wasn't sure whether Bellany is showing early signs of
dementia or he needed the publicity (a book coming out?) !! :-)))

At first I thought it was a spoof, but it appears to be genuine. Whether
liberties have been taken with context I can't say. The rest about Blair
though is 100% true co's I said so.

Philip Eden has already told us that Bellamy is a member of the UK
Independence Party, but since politics is banned on this newsgroup
I can say no more :-(

Blair announce at Prime Minister's questions last Wednesday that
when he was holding the Chairmanship of both the EU and of the
Club of Nine (or whatever) he would be concentrating on the twin
problems of Africa and Global Warming.

I thought, Lawrence, you would be relieved to hear that :-)

Cheers, Alastair.

He may be an "environmentalist" when it suits him, but his extreme right
wing political stance prevents him from having an objective view on GW.
He is probably just after some free publicity for his book launch
anyway.

Even former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who first picked up on
Global Warming as a serious issue wasn't so far off to the right that
she ignored good scientific advice.

is scientifically proven that 99 per cent of the worlds greenhouse emissions
come from natural sources over which we have no control. Yet millions are
being spent which will have no effect whatsoever on global warming.

How odd then that the observed build up of CO2 gas in the atmosphere
shows the characteristic isotopic signature of fossil fuels...

Part of what he says is true - we cannot spend on alternatives or
improve energy efficiency fast enough to prevent significant GW so we
are going to have to adapt to it. Rising sea levels and modified
rainfall patterns are two likely consequences that are already beginning
to show up on insurance claims.

We must wait patiently until something obviously caused by GW seriously
affects the US. Only then will the subject be taken seriously.

There is a letter published in the New Scientist from four individuals who
work for Rothamsted Research or the Hadley Centre for Cimate research
stating that Bellamy has been highly selective with the evidence he has used
and therefore has only given one part of the story which is highly
misleading. This was in response to a letter written by David Bellamy
published on the 22nd of May putting foward the views mentioned above.

I rarely enter into GW debates but feel I must say something here.

It is a measurable fact that the earth is now warming up, ie global warming is
happening. And that is all we have in truth, the rest is just theories with some
based on sound science and others based on vested interests or personal gain.

Well Will. Most on here have far greater scientific knowledge than me. The
cynic in me though is always looking for the angle. Here I believe
especially in the UK, where so few actually work to support increasingly the
many that don't, that state expenditure is now so high that other ways to
raise revenue are now being used in particularly Global warming.
All businesses now pay a climate levy that is reflected in the consumer
price. So hype up the dangers and charge accordingly.
I'll say one last thing. The exclusion zone in London was brought in by Mr
Livingstone and is now planned to be extended. This was never about global
warming or pollution or even congestion. No. The fact is if every motorist
pays the £5, the traffic levels can go back to what they were before the
scheme started! Great lots of revenue for Ken's scatty schemes you know the
"gay Museum" sort of thing. Opps getting political now. I'm probably still
smarting after hearing (knew for some time actually) plans to extend the
mens retirement age to 70. Mind you Will you've already retired I believe .
There will be millions though not so fortunate.

Rising sea levels may well at least help their voting system as much of
Florida is not much above sea level.

Admitting that puts you one step ahead of Bush and his US big oil
cronies.
My own position on this issue not all that far from that of BP's.

And that is all we have in truth, the rest is just theories

with some
based on sound science and others based on vested interests or personal

gain.

Actually the increases in CO2 concentration (and its isotopic signature)
coupled with the constraints imposed by direct satellite measurement of
solar flux mean that even the most extreme right wing real scientists
have privately admitted that they cannot maintain the reasonable doubt
argument beyond 2010 without selling their souls.

But just like with tobacco there will be some volunteers using legally
crafted formulations of words to reassure the public that smoking is
safe.

You are paranoid. Unemployment is relatively low in the UK now. Try
reading the Economist's take on the science behind GW and get back to
reality.

The really serious problem with Global Warming is that it is occurring
very slowly compared to the 5 year planning horizons of our rather dumb
politicians. Margaret Thatcher was exceptional in realising just how
serious a long term issue this will ultimately become.

We cannot realistically stop it, but we can still slow it down and buy
more time. And at the same time make finite oil reserves last longer.

All businesses now pay a climate levy that is reflected in the consumer
price. So hype up the dangers and charge accordingly.

I don't mind at all if the doubters buy some insurance so that when the
evidence becomes absolutely compelling there is some chance of doing
something about it. I don't necessarily agree with the climate levy, but
at least they are trying to do something. We will look pretty silly
otherwise when the Thames barrier is no longer high enough to protect
London.

It is sheer insanity to refuse even to consider no regrets energy
efficiency measures and continue mass producing ever less efficient
SUV's.

US vehicle fuel efficiency is heading down towards 10mpg at present.
