A new record five times the old one sounds bloody impressive -- until
you realise it's only five times bugger all anyway. :-)

[However, I have to admit, while 3 inches is only a decent
thunderstorm hereabouts, 16 inches in a day would impress the locals
up here in the drier end of the hills. But 24 inches in a day is not
exceptional down on the coast between Ingham and Daintree; and 30
inches in a day is not unknown there.]

Oh the magical magical tropical islands!

Cheers, Phred.

Which country are you posting from? IIRC, the record rainfall in a day
for the UK is only something like 10 inches. Admittedly there have
probably been higher falls at spots that don't happen to have "official"
rain gauges, but 30 inches in a day anywhere in the UK seems pretty
implausible to me.
