Default Today's model interpretation (6/07/04)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Saturday. Issued
0610z, 6/07/04.

ECMWF: http://64.246.48.81/pics/Recm1201.gif
Westerlies cover the UK, with a ridge over France and lows to the NW and NE.
A weak ridge covers the Irish Sea at T+144, while eastern Enfland lies under
a trough. Westerlies and WNW'lies are the result, followed by cyclonic winds
at T+168 as a low deepens over southern Scotland.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html
Biscay lies under a ridge, with low pressure over southern Norway. The UK
lies between the two, under NW'lies. The NW'lies increase in strength at
T+144 as a trough deepens to the east of Scotland.

GFS: http://64.246.48.81/pics/Rtavn1201.gif
Lows are located to the west of southern Norway, to the south of Greenland
and over Newfoundland. The UK lies under light westerlies, with 850hPa
temperatures ranging from +2C over NW Scotland to +4C over Kent. The
Newfoundland low moves eastwards and deepens at T+144, while the Norweigan
low deepens and also moves eastwards. NW'lies cover much of the UK, with a
shallow trough over Scotland. The NW'lies continue at T+168, with the
ex-Newfoundland low now halfway across the Atlantic. It lies to the
immediate west of the UK on day 8, with SW'lies, followed by westerlies as
it fills over Scotland on day 9. Day 10 sees the low move away to the NE,
allowing a ridge to bring NW'lies across the UK.

GEM: http://www.meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120.html
Southern Scandinavia lies under low pressure, with westerlies and NW'lies
over the UK. 850hPa temperatures range from +4C over northern Scotland to
+7C over SE England. By T+144 a second low spawns over the Netherlands,
bringing NW'lies and NNW'lies for the UK.

JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html
The Japanese run shows light NNW'lies for the UK, with lows to the WNW and
NE. 850hPa temperatures vary from +1C over Scotland to +4C over SW England.
The winds become NW'lies at T+144 as a ridge builds to the west, followed by
more of the same at T+168. Even on day 8 the ridge remains to the west, with
NW'lies across the UK.

In summary, one word sums up today's runs - unsettled! A NW'ly flow looks
likely, with low pressure never far away. The GFS in particular looks
Autumnal, with a series of lows crossing the Atlantic. There are still
differences regarding track and intensity of the lows, so as ever, more runs
are needed.
