It seems quite common that when such dreadful weather is approaching South
GB, the weather here is good. Just drove down to Belfast City airport and
back (120 miles) with only 1/8 Ci, a temp of about 18C and what seems
unlimited visbilty. Overall, it is a lovely summer's evening.

Apart from a brief shower it was a 'sitting in the sun' afternoon here
with a max of 20.2°C.

I suppose if we wanted to over simplify the weather, it does seem to
alternate in horizontal bands of varying width. I suppose you couldn't get
HP without LP around! Last week I had the reverse of your current situation-
fabulous in Jersey with the low centred up towards Iceland.

And very pleasant up here as well, though the cloud is rolling
in now. A max of 19.0C with a good deal of sunshine, though there
was a sharp shower in the early hours.

It looked at one time as if NW England would miss out on this one
though that now looks unlikely to be the case.
However I still think it won't be as bad as they are making out, NE
winds don't usually bring much rain here, a lot will break up over
the Pennines.

It's bloody cold here in Wimborne! 55.2F (I see that is your latitude:-) at
7:30 pm, raining, and I missed an appointment this afternoon because a
tree had been blown down.

Cheers, Alastair

Not a lot of rain here today, though it did get incredibly dark a few
times and there were some rumbles of thunder earlier. Very clear this
evening with details showing well on the hills.
BTW - yesterday evening the cloud seemed to be arranged in approx east
west stripes, and some of the contrails were in what I can only describe
as a helix pattern. What sort of air movement would cause that? Also a
nice sun dog.

Now I think about it, I can probably answer my own question as the
contrails were at right angles to the cloud stripes, so I assume
sideways air movement combined with the momentum of the trail would give
a helix effect.

Still the same here, though it's now too cool to sit outside and enjoy the last
of the sunshine.
