Rainfall radar stills http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/live/brradar.shtml

Area of rain moves slowly north over England and Wales on Wednesday night -
heavy in eastern England - but decreases in intensity over northern England
on Thursday morning. Second rain area moves from France over the Channel
Islands overnight and then on to parts of the south coast and adjacent areas
of southern England. Showers develop in the Midlands and southern and
eastern England in the afternoon and turn heavy with thunder in quite a few
places.

Great Malvern, Bedford and Scampton 22 mm, Bridlington and Coltishall 23
mm, Dunkeswell and Weybourne 24 mm, Boscombe Down 25 mm, Holbeach and
Wattisham 26 mm, Little Rissington 27 mm, Guernsey 28 mm, Odiham 29 mm,
Cottesmore 39 mm, Coningsby 40 mm, Andrewsfield 54 mm, Wittering 108 mm
!!

Wittering 108 mm = 57 mm (12 hours to 06z on Thursday) + 51 mm (12 hours to
18z on Thursday). Is this correct or has some duplication crept in
somewhere ?

Ahh, I had Wattisham confused with Wittering earlier re the initial 57mm.
Looking at the radar returns from earlier it looks plausible but I'll try to
confirm if I can.

Would be interesting to know if anyone observed hail today ?

Cheers,
Jon.

I have had an e-mail from Wittering Met. Office confirming the figures.

Rainfall at Wittering on Thursday was 52.6 mm in 12 hrs ending 0900
[continuous rain over about 9 hours] and 52.9 mm in 12 hrs ending 2100
[violent thunderstorm with hail] i.e. 105.5 mm for that 24 hour period.

57 + 51 mm were of course the SYNOPs readings at 0600 and 1800 on Thursday.

Thanks to the staff member at Wittering who took the trouble to write to me.
