GENERALLY MOIST AND MILD WEST TO SOUTH-WEST WINDS. The general pressure situation for the period 21st to 31st August shows LP to the NW of the country. HP is shown as a flat ridge to the S North Sea, covering the south-east of England and a further weak belt of HP stretches northwards up the North Sea, Winds are generally W in the west of the country turning SW and S in the E of the country. This means much rain throughout the period for the W of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Dryer weather can be expected down the E coastal areas and especially dry for the SE of England. Western areas of England should generally have cooler and showery weather. Temperatures 21st to 26th - warm in the S and SE, cooler in the NW of the country. 27th - cooler air sweeps across the country. 28th to 30th - cooler in W and NW, SE a little warmer. 31st - cooler in N and NW, warmer in the SE. The run of weather starts on 21st with LP to the NW of Scotland and a secondary depression near SW Ireland. HP over the near continent covers the SE of England and parts of the British eastern coastal area. Winds are from the S or SW over the whole country. A front, running easterly from the Atlantic, touches the N of Scotland and turns southwards down the western side of the North Sea before it touches the small LP W of Biscay. Heavy rain expected over Northern Ireland and W Scotland. Parts of the S coast could also have some rain showers. Strongest winds expected well to the E of Scotland and also to the SW of England and Ireland. On 22nd, LP to the W of Scotland and a flat HP ridge comes into the coastal areas of S England. A small secondary depression could lie to the W of Ireland. A front stretches W/E across N Scotland and another front stretches W/E along the Channel. Winds are between SW in the W of the country and westerly over the E side of the country. The air is more humid over central and SE England and heavy rain is expected over Northern Ireland and W Scotland. The SE of England should have some heavier showers, too. Strongest winds should lie to the NW of Ireland. On 23rd, a complex area of LP lies from the NW of the country across Scotland to NE England and a part of the North Sea. Once again, there may be a small secondary depression just to the W of Ireland. A small flat ridge of HP can just be identified to the SW of England. Winds are mostly W over the whole country. Heavy rain can be expected to the SW of the country and rain showers over central areas, where the most humid conditions prevail. Strongest winds seem to surround Scotland and a strong wind area lies to the SW of the country. On 24th, LP has moved to the N and NW of Scotland and a secondary depression has moved to the Channel near SE England. Winds are NW in the W of the country and W over E'tern areas. Heavy rain lies over SE England, otherwise the rest of the country has rain showers. The E of Scotland may start off mainly fair. The weather to the SW of England should improve later. Strongest winds well to the E of Scotland and also to the NW of Ireland. On 25th, the Azores HP sends a flat ridge northwards into S Ireland and SW England. with fronts stretching N/S on its western flank out in the Atlantic. A small depression lies in the North Sea near Holland. Winds are cool NW over the country. Heavy rain showers stretch in a belt from NW England down to SE England. Strongest winds expected over the North Sea. On 26th, a strong depression comes near the NW of Ireland. Its fronts stretch southwards to the W of Ireland. A HP area over the near continent covers the SE and E'tern parts of England. The air over the country will be more humid from the W as a SW breeze sets in. Heavy rain can be expect along the S of the country. Strongest winds expected in the NW of the country. On 27th, the strong depression to the NW of Scotland is still on station and sends a trough eastwards as far as E Scotland and NE England. A flat HP ridge covers the S North Sea. Winds are W or SW in the west of the country and S or SE over E Scotland. Fronts stretch from W Scotland down the W coast towards Wales and SW England. A cold front runs NE/SW off the W coast of Ireland. Heavy rain is expected over Scotland and rain showers expected elsewhere. Strongest winds from W Scotland down the western areas of Britain to the SW approaches. On 28th, the weakening depression (which may still be strong) lies to the N of Ireland. with fronts down the Irish Sea. A small secondary depression may approach the SW of Britain. A large HP area lies to the E of Britain over the near continent. Winds are S over the whole country. Humid air covers the country. Rain showers over all areas, but heavy rain can be expected over SW Britain. Strongest wind areas to the W of Scotland and to the SW of England. On 29th, a depression to the S of Iceland has a trough eastwards to the SW of Norway. HP lies to the SE of the country and a small depression is near the SW of England. Winds are light from the W or SW. A front brushes the NW of Scotland and the N of Northern Ireland .. Mainly fair weather expected over England, but showers expected over N Scotland. Humid air for most areas. Strongest winds to the W of Scotland. On 30th, LP to the NW of the British Isles with a trough SE'wards across Ireland and SW England into the Channel. HP lies to the NE of Britain. Winds are SE light over most areas. Heavy rain lies over SW areas with rain showers elsewhere. Fair weather over NE Scotland and SE England. Humid conditions away from SE England. Strongest winds off NW Scotland and NE Scotland. On 31st, LP to the NW of Ireland and another LP to the NW of Scotland. HP to the SE of Britain. SW winds cover the country. Heavy rain over W areas of the couintry. Humid from SW to NE of the country. The general weather for the next period - 1st to 10th September - is still influenced by the LP to the NW of the country with a trough stretching SE'wards down to SE England. HP in a curve from Norway S'wards then E'wards to Greece. This is the beginning of a HP build-up over the near continent and E Britain for mid-September. Details are available later. If you want to check these forecasts it is probably better to have the 9-day GFS forecast charts in front of you to observe and compare, what the NWP-charts show, with what has been written here. Usually the first 3 or 4 charts will show some agreement, but after that you'll have to wait for the NWPs to catch up. Cheers, Keith |
