Default High-based cumulus this afternoon

If my ancient observing skills remain intact I estimate
that the cu base this afternoon here (i.e. Luton) has
been at 5000ft at least ... I might even have been
tempted to report it as 6000ft. And yet there's
sufficient vertical development to code it as CL=2.
All rather un-English.

Yes Philip, as is the pattern of weather this week with the bands of
thunderstorms on Tuesday and Thursday not breaking up the weather. Very
Mediterranean. In the 1950s and '60s for example it was more like " three
fine days and a thunderstorm.

Temperature/dewpoint split at Luton was 10 degrees at maximum
However, Luton often seems to record too high a dewpoint
(dip that wick more often! Memo. Headhunt Sven!)

At Cambridge, temp reached 29, dewpoint at the time 15 degrees, ie 14
degrees split.

This translates into a cumulus base of 14*400= 5,600 feet - a glider pilot's
idea of heaven.

Hope it's as good tomorrow. I'm forecasting at a gliding competition near
Cambridge for the next 9 days and tomorrow provisionally looks very good.

By the way, Britain might have a new European Gliding Champion, Russell
Cheetham, following the comp in Lithuania, but they could still use the
reserve day, Saturday for another race.
