Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Friday. Issued 0554z,
9/08/04. After a possible brief northerly or NE'ly spell, it looks as though low pressure will once again stall to the SW. There are large differences between the runs, though, with the MetO bringing unsettled weather across the UK and the GFS/JMA going for cols instead. As ever, more runs are needed. ECMWF: http://64.246.48.81/pics/Recm1201.gif A trough covers England and Wales, bringing NE'lies and northerlies. Northern Ireland lies under a col, while Scotland is affected by ENE'lies. Much of the UK lies under a col at T+144, with the exception of Northern Ireland - here, there are southerlies from a low to the west. The col becomes a weak ridge over England and Wales at T+168, bringing southerlies for Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland. The northern half of Scotland lies under a small trough, with cyclonic winds. MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html The Met Office run shows a trough over the North Sea and another trough over Ireland, with light winds for much of the UK. The parent low to the SW moves closer to Ireland at T+144, bringing SE'lies to Scotland and Northern Ireland, with SSW'lies elsewhere. GFS: http://64.246.48.81/pics/Rtavn1201.gif Scotland lies under NE'lies and a weak ridge, whereas the rest of the UK is covered by a trough, with easterlies or NE'lies for Northern Ireland and northern England; elsewhere winds are WNW'lies. 850hPa temperatures vary from +9C over Wales to +11C over NE Scotland. A ridge builds over Ireland at T+144, with northerlies and NNW'lies for many. The winds fall light at T+168 as the ridge declines, followed by southerlies and SE'lies on day 8 as a low deepens to the SW of Ireland. The low deepens further to the west of Scotland on day 9, with WSW'lies for most, followed by westerlies on day 10 as the low fills over Shetland. GEM: http://www.meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120.html The Canadian run shows northerlies for much of the UK, with low pressure over eastern Europe and the former Russian states; to the SW there's a smaller low. 850hPa temperatures vary from +9C to +10C over the UK, warmest over Scotland. Light northerlies continue to cover the UK at T+144. JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html Low pressure is centred over Poland, with a trough over England and Wales. Winds are NE'lies for most, with northerlies for southern England. 850hPa temperatures vary from +9C over SW England to +12C over northern Scotland. A col covers the UK at T+144, followed by southerlies and SE'lies at T+168 as a weak ridge moves over the North Sea. THe chart for day 8 shows no isobars over pretty much the whole of western Europe, including the UK, so winds will be light for all. |
