Default Today's model interpretation (16/08/04)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Friday. Issued 0611z,
16/08/04.

The models are mixed today, with initial unsettled conditions being replaced
by a (possibly brief) settled interlude - the GFS in particular is keen to
return to unsettled weather after the weekend.

ECMWF: http://64.246.48.81/pics/Recm1201.gif
A trough covers the UK, bringing northerlies for Scotland and Northern
Ireland. Elsewhere, winds are SW'lies, but by T+144 northerlies cover the
whole of the UK as the trough moves away eastwards. Light and variable winds
move over much of the UK at T+168 due to a ridge.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html
The UK is affected by northerlies and NW'lies, due to a trough to the east.
By T+144 the winds become lighter WNW'lies and NNW'lies, with a weak ridge
over England and Wales.

GFS: http://64.246.48.81/pics/Rtavn1201.gif
As with the ECM run, the UK lies under a trough. This time, winds are
NNW'lies for much of the UK, with the exception of England, which lies under
westerlies. 850hPa temperatures range from +2C over northern Scotland to +7C
over SE England. A weak ridge brings southerlies and SW'lies at T+144,
before a new low deepens over Northern Ireland on day 7. The low brings
strong SW'lies for England and Wales, with SW'lies and ESE'lies for
Scotland. By day 8 the low moves away to the NW, leaving the UK under strong
northerlies and NW'lies. The winds ease somewhat on day 9 as a ridge builds
over England and Wales, followed by stronger westerleis on day 10 as a low
moves ESE'wards over Iceland.

GEM: http://www.meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120.html
The UK mainly lies under northerlies, with a trough to the east and a
secondary low to the SW. 850hPa temperatures vary from +1C over NW Scotland
to +6C over southern England. The secondary low deepens over SW England at
T+144, bringing easterlies and NE'lies for the UK.

JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html
England and Wales lie under SW'lies, while Scotland and Northern Ireland are
affected by northerlies, all due to a trough over northern England. 850hPa
temperatures vary from +1C over northern Scotland to +7C widely over England
and Wales. Northerlies affect the whole of the UK at T+144, before a ridge
brings light winds for all at T+168. The winds become light NW'lies for day
8, with a ridge persisting over the UK.
