Good morning (?) all.

Warm and mostly clear weather persisted through Saturday as temperatures
reached 37C in a few isolated locations within the agglomeration of Athens,
like the N. Philadelphia station. Not warmer than 30-32C in the afternoon
for coastal areas of Attica, while Friday night was spent out in the
comfortable low-mid 20s. Inland low lying areas of central continental
Greece were quite warm once again, with temperatures reaching 36.4C at both
Lamia and Larisa.

Thessaloniki (AP): 21-34.8C
Volos (AP): 20-33C
Irakleio (AP): 21.4-31C
Athens (Elliniko): 21.2-32.2C
Patras (AP): 20-32C

Yannis, SE Athens
+26.2C, RH 39%, SLP 1007.1 hPa - clear, calm night

Yannis'll know much more of course, but I guess the ususal huminity-levels
in Greece are lower than ours. Thankfully, for these overnight-temps in
Holland would certainly lead to nightmares or non-sleep! Dropping moods and
very bad temper at the end. So now and then I'm a really grateful singer in
this eternal rain:-).

Blankets? In summer? Only in interior valleys & plains, as well as more
mountainous areas -certainly not in Athens!
I saw northern Europeans putting on their jumpers when temps fell below 20C
at night with light winds, so the low 20s really is a very comfortable
level -for Greeks as well as foreigners. Remember humidity indices are quite
low in summer (in Athens, not necessarilly all of the country), especially
when the etesians rull. Never has a dew point of 22C or higher been recorded
this summer, even with temperatures close to 40C. Check
http://2004.e-kairos.gr/august.html (third graph, middle of the page) for
average hourly dew points and temperatures during the current month.

Gee, I just came back from work, I hope it's not too late now that I'm
replying, the women's Marathon should be starting about now! Is there a way
you can still text her? :-)

It is currently +32.2C and RH 35% here in S.E. Athens. Today's
Marathonodromes should be expecting temperatures around 27-31C during their
course. Humidity levels shouldn't be bothering them really. Here are some
webpages that can give you online reports for the route:

http://www.noa.gr/Issues/Weathergr.html (National Observatory of Athens)

http://www.emy.gr/emy/english/ath2004/stations/ams_html (Hellenic National
Meteorological Service. Slow to load, shows current temperatures or winds
around Attica. Click on site of interest for last readings).

http://www.emy.gr/emy/english/ath200...ation=marathon
(Marathon 1990-2000 average hourly data from the HNMS again).

And a very rough map of the route: http://www.e-kairos.gr/attica.gif (temps
are for 1510 UTC)

Is the course or part of it much above sea level?

No, not really. I think it's not higher than 350m at any part of the route.
Highest point is between Mt. Imittos and Mt. Penteli, while the finishing
point is at ~80m.

Enjoy the games!
