uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

Ian
I quite agree with you. There seems to be many more 30+days in these summers and this would be of interest to know how 2003 compares with other good summers or others with 30+days. It seems incredible when compared to those summers 1954, 1956 1958 that had so few days even above 22 |

Remember that with the exception of 1959, the 1950's and 1960's were devoid of good summers. However, if you go even further back, I think you will find that 30C+ days were still pretty common in the past: Here are some figures on 30C+ days in Coventry: 2003 3 1997 4 1996 3 1995 10 1990 4 1989 3 1983 5 1976 13 1975 4 1947 5 1933 2 1921 4 1911 8 1893 11 Years not mentioned + either 1 or 0 Hope this helps with your 'debate'. -- Steve Jackson, Bablake Weather Station, Coventry, UK http://www.netlink.co.uk/usrs/bws |

Many thanks Steve,
Actually the figures you show to slant towards what I was driving at. 1975 to 2003 you have 9 entries whereas in the preceding 82 years you have 5 entries. Actually I do take your point if we go back into the 19th century. I was looking at the Greenwich record and for 1868 there were 16 occasions though the screen there was non standard. Nonetheless it was a hot summer. I wonder if there is an 18.5 year cycle somewhere :-? I wonder if there is an 18.5 year cycle somewhere :-? Lunar nodal cycle, Alastair :-)? Well it repeats after 1976 - 1893 years. That's 83. So 83 must be the lowest common multiplier of 18.5 and another cycle which is a multiple of approx 4.5 years. So we are looking for another cycle of around 5, 9, 27, or possibly 83 years. Any ideas Mike? Cheers, Alastair. |
