Default August 1912 (compliments to Philip Eden)

Firstly, well done Philip for putting an excellent article in the Saturday
Telegraph describing the remarkable August of 1912. Most of us knew it was
bad but not that bad.
I think the terrible floods in Norwich have not been documented enough.
Some have mentioned these floods but that rainfall total of 8.1 inches which
is over 200mm is nearly a third of the annual total. To us in East Anglia it
hard to visualise something like that. What the total must have been for the
whole month in the Norfolk area is hard to imagine, as that figure of 8.1
inches in the storm was in addition of course to what else fell in the
month.
I have seen the plaques marking the flood in Norwich as I lived there
some years ago. I believe that some people were killed in that flood.
The Norfolk rainstorm is described in great detail in Ingrid Holford's
book, British Weather Disasters. I had a copy years ago but cannot lay my
hands on it now though.
Ingrid Holford used to be in the Royal Met Society. I wonder if she is
still around. She had a couple of good popular books on the UK weather.
