uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

Default Is it global warming or hemispheric warming

I put my hand up to say that I think man-made changes to our climate are
the predominant signature.

One of the reasons is a world view of SST's as indicated e.g. by:

https://152.80.49.210/PUBLIC/

One look at the projection invites the question - why is there a virtual
absence of any significant SST positive deviation in the southern
hemisphere? To which my (lay) answer would be that there has not yet
been much of a flow of warmer waters crossing the equator. This suggests
that the main changes influencing ocean temperatures are not global but
local ATM to the northern hemisphere. This is surely where all the main
industrialised countries are to be found and where due to the
atmospheric circulation seeming to show little crossing of the equator
also, the additional man-made warmth is concentrating and contributing
to the rise in SST's.

I would be glad to hear from the science community as to whether they
share this understanding, or whether they feel there is another force at
work driving up the Arctic SST's but not the Antarctic seas.

Cheers,
James
