![]() "Steve Jones" wrote in message ... http://www.metoffice.com/corporate/r...es/headcp.html I think this is a low salary given the qualifications and experience needed for the job compared with what is available in other emploment sectors. This possibly explains why these subjects are becoming less popular at university than other courses. You are talking about six or seven years as a student before getting your PhD and probaly severable years after that at a derisory rate of pay as a resaerch assistant. This is a very unattractive proposition given the high cost of housing in the UK. Alan |

But it's *positive* discrimination. Reminds me of a scene from 'The Office' when they talk about the midget driving a fork lift truck with huge shoes so he can reach the pedals! --- This message has been certified Virus Free by some very clever boffin at Grisoft. Steve Loft : Brian Wakem wrote: That's illegal isn't it, as it discriminates against able-bodied people? No. I've heard of this scheme before. I think if I were disabled I'd be against it, because I'd forever be going to interviews that both the employer and I knew I had no realistic chance of getting. What a waste of time! What a waste of time! You've completely boggled me there. You apply for a job where you know you are guaranteed an interview. You know you have no chance of getting the job, but you apply anyway and attend the interview. And then you complain it's a waste of time! ![]() LOW ???????? I thought someone would react to my rether provocative remarks. It is a serious point though as this job must be very senior in the Met Office heirarchy. I suspect a job of that stature in business would command a larger salary than the one offered. I realise that nobody joins the MetO to get rich but if science based jobs keep the reputation they have of being poorly rewarded it will be difficult to attract the brightest and best into this area which I think is absolutely vital for the country a a whole. When a very modest hosue costs £250,000 in the SE a salary of £60,000 is needed to be able to get a mortgage of sufficient size. Alan I would guess less than 5% in the MetO earn a salary like that.
