Seems to be a pretty nasty situation in Grenada as it was directly hit
by hurricane Ivan on Tuesday evening.
Ivan seems to have been on the border between 3 to 4 on the
Saffir-Simpson scale at the time.

It is likened to the aftermath in Hiroshima, 85% of buildings
destroyed, all trees down, power, telephone, radio, water out!!

210 mph at 350 feet ! One shudders to think what the sea surface must be like
under those conditions.

That's category five, and it gets worse. Extract from today's 11 am
GMT NHC Discussion on Ivan:

"The upper-level outflow pattern is impressive and well-established
....And if anything...will only get better for the next 72-96 hours.
Therefore...the future intensity will likely be modulated by inner-
core convective changes and land interaction since th water ahead of
Ivan is only forecast to get warmer...as warm as 30c south of Cuba
and over the Florida Straits."

So, Ivan is currently forecast to:

- Cross Jamaica as a strong cat. 4 bordering on cat. 5.
- Cross Cuba as a Cat 4.
- reach Florida as a Cat 3 or Cat 4.

This is not good.

warming, just maybe George Bush will start to come on board with the
rest of the world in doing something about emissions now, especially with a
brother to look after in the hurricane's path. When it starts to hit
home... ?

Hardly. Florida may be hit 3 times but Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and
Alabama have had none. So that's 3 landfalls in the gulf states this
season so far, not unusual at all.

Still turning out to be a nasty season of course, especially so as it
was a late starter and all the bad ones seem to be coming at the same
time.
