DJ Hurricane Jeanne Makes Landfall In Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP)--Jeanne reached hurricane
strength and made landfall Thursday on the evacuated eastern tip of the
Dominican Republic, leaving behind a blacked-out Puerto Rico still counting
the damage from a hit that turned roads in raging rivers and killed two
people.
"It is over land as we speak ... right on Cabo Engano," meteorologist
Mike Tichacek of the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Cabo Engano is a
small fishing and farming village evacuated Wednesday by Dominican
authorities who said hundreds of people fled homes on the north coast and
outlying island of Saona.
