Default WR - Surprise thunderstorm

Driving home this evening, on the college run and we noticed lightning
to the NE - much to our surprise as nothing so active had been forecast.
Sure enough, looks like a storm over NE norfolk:

There was a brief heavy shower in Chalfont St Giles this evening. I
didn't note the exact time but it was sometime after 8 p.m.

Yes, I noticed some castellanus towers to the north east from Coulsdon when
I was walking down into the Chipstead Valley to do the post mid afternoon
Tuesday. They were visible in a clear gap through the lower level strato
cumulus. It indicated some mid level instability and can be a forerunner of
storms or showers.
Ian Currie-Coulsdon.
