Strewth that day brings back memories. I was a forecaster at London Weather
Centre in 1979 forecasting wind and waves for the offshore industry. I went off
night shift 4 days before the race and I remember that for an exploration rig
near S. Ireland I was forecasting 30-35 knots gusting 45 knots. It wasn't strong
enough but 4 days ahead it satisfied the enquiry - phew !!! (At the time it was
thought that I was a bit rash going so high as it was based on instincts (or
"seat of the pants" forecasting) rather than model evidence.

Will.

There's a regional TV programme on BBC South West at 10.35 this evening
- "Storm Force Ten" remembering the Fastnet disaster of 25 years ago,
followed by "Those in Peril" about some of the region's lifeboat rescues
in bad weather.
Sadly it is only being shown in the South West region but subscribers to
Sky Digital should be able to receive it on Channel 957 (I think)
