We use XP/2000 for our automation motion control systems - using a PCI card with embedded processors. If windows crashes, the card still runs and the machine still functions - I assume there will be similar controls on military hardware (and indeed dual redundancy as in oil rigs etc.).

They admit it themselves - it's the reason they won't put Windows in
the nuclear subs. So they are only half stupid...
