Default Cold winter forecast shock news.

I was listening to snatches of radio five just after 9 am today and I heard
Victoria Derbyshire mention that within the next hour they'd be covering a
news story about a predicted severe winter. I get in to work and than a
colleague informs me, about a severe winter being forecast in the news.
Eventually I check the BBC news website and find this story

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3738824.stm

So the source of this breaking news is METCHEQUE, Mr Andrew Bond. So the BBC
has dumbed down, a down to far. Yes they've scrapped lower than Dermot
Moneyhand, Slasher Kinky and that Danniel Corbett. It's so bloody bad now at
the ideologically led BBC, that they've help start a wave of pending winter
doom from Metcheque. Have they stopped checking the validity of their
sources.
We're rapidly sinking into a world of goobledy gook and nonsense.
Alternative comedy, alternative lifestyle, alternative medicine and
alternative meteorology.
Now Andrew you've always seemed a nice chap; but you predicting weather
beyond half-an-hour do me a favour! As for that bunch of fools at the BBC?
Well I've always supported the notion of the BBC with it's high quality
programming not influenced by commercial considerations. Now though with
the opinionated dross they serve up saddled with an innept gullibility;
forget it.

For those of you lucky enough not to be living within the BBC London broadcast
region, or lucky enough to have missed the local news early this evening, AB
was interviewed in person (this remark is an opinion on the programme, not AB).
The justification for the f'cast was given but so briefly I am afraid I missed
it (I do not pay much attention to that programme). This was followed by Peter
Cockcroft's forecast of a cold snap next week, though all credit to PC for
expressing scepticism on the winter forecast (I had woken up a bit by this
time!). The forecast details can be seen (free) at
http://www.metcheck.com/premium/winter2004.asp, where it appears a bit less
hyped up than on the news tonight. If Andrew is reading this thread, I am sure
there would be genuine interest in his reasoning.

All I think we can say at present is that AB has a 50% chance of being right if
the only alternative to 'cold' is 'mild'. If this month does end up colder than
average, it continues the trend for Octs. to buck the warming trend. Off the
top of my head I can think of both warm and cold winters that have followed
mild Octobers. Others no doubt will be able to express the odds more precisely
than that.

NB. I wish to make it clear that I am not an habitual viewer of the BBC London
local news in the early evening. Long may that remain true!

Forgetting the 'hyp', I like the way the forecast has been presented,
with similar percentages to that of Paul Bartlett (no connection here
of course). It seems that if the media have used this as the basis of
their 'hyp' I think they've gone over the top, as there is no
suggestion of a 1963 / 1947 winter here.
