MORE ANTICYCLONIC WEATHER FOR ENGLAND, WALES AND SOUTH-EAST SCOTLAND
WITH FROST AND FOG EARLY AND LATE. SHOWERS FOR THE WEST AND
NORTH-WEST.

The single chart for the period 21st to 31st October shows high pressure
covering the most part of England, Wales and south-east Scotland.
Although the high pressure is not a permanent fixture, but represents a
series of transiting high pressure systems, it is a slight improvement
from the weather we have been having. Low pressure lies to the west
and north-west of the British Isles. Generally south-west winds are
expected in the west of the country and light winds expected in the
south and east of the country. From this configuration we can expect
much frost and fog over England and Wales during this period and dryer
conditions over the same areas. The wettest areas can be expected in
the west and north-west of the country.

From 21st to 24th, cooler air lies in the west and covers central
districts, too. Radiation of heat during the night is most likely
responsible for the lower remperatures over central areas and cooler
winds from the Atlantic responsible for cooler air in western
districts. On 25th and 26th, milder air drifts into the south and
south-east of England with the cooler air in the west and north-western
areas. On 27th and 28th, cool air is drawn from the NW of Scotland
south and south-eastwards down the whole country. On 29th to 31st,
with cool air to the north-west of the British Isles, milder air comes
once again into the south and south-east of England.

The run of weather begins on Thursday, 21st, with a ridge of HP
stretching N/S covering Ireland, W Scotland, Wales and W England. The
HP moves eastwards and topples over into the North Sea and near
continent. Behind it, over the Atlantic, a depression moves towards N
Scotland. Winds are light at first, but become SW later from the
west. Fronts to the west of Ireland move eastwards and bring rain
showers to Ireland and the W of Scotland.
On Fri. 22nd, the rest of the HP in the SE, stretches from W/E
along the Channel with a depression to the NW of Scotland. A small
depression out in the Atlantic is moving towards S Ireland. Winds are
SW over most areas, but could be light at first in the SE of England.
Strong winds over Ireland and Scotland but strongest winds to the W of
Scotland. Rain shower over most areas, but dry in the S and SE at
first.
On Sat. 23rd, the HP over the near continent still has a tail-end
over the SE of England and the near North Sea. A LP areas lies to the
NW and N of Scotland and a secondary depression comes into the SW of
Ireland. There appears to be a quick pressure rise in the SW of the
country which spreads a little way north-eastwards into England. Winds
are S or SW down the west of the country at first. Later winds
decrease. Strongest winds off E Scotland, and some strong winds in the
SW of England. There may be a weak front stretching along the Channel
bringing a chance of showers to the SE of England. Rain showers can be
expected over W Scotland. The heaviest rain falls in the SW of
Britain. Fog and frost may accumulate in the south of the country
during the evening and night.
On Sun. 24th, HP covers the British Isles. Low pressure travels
across the top of Scotland. Winds are light but from a westerly
direction over Scotland. Strongest winds off NE Scotland. Fog may
be slow to clear from south-western areas but clearance should be
quicker over Scotland. Otherwise the SW of the country should be dry.
Scotland and the E of the country may have some showers.
On Mon. 25th, the HP over the country has now moved eastwards and
lies as a small ridge in the S North Sea. This now affects SE and S
England. A new depression is moving towards Northern Ireland with its
fronts coming into SW England. Winds are S to SW over most of the
country, but light in the SE. Strongest winds to the N of Scotland,
strong winds in the SW of the country. Early fog (with frost) should
clear from most areas, but fog may linger in the SE of England.
Showers cover most of the country except the SE of England at first.
On Tues. 26th, whereas the LP to the W of the country moves
towards the N of Scotland, HP builds up over England and SE Scotland.
Winds are SW in the west and north of Britain. Strongest winds to the
W of Scotland. Showers in the northern half of the country. Fog is
expected to develop over the Midlands with frost in many areas.
On Wed. 27th, a deep depression lies S of Iceland, its fronts
touch N Scotland and other fronts lie down the west side of the
country. There may be an improvement in the fog situation but the
evenings bring cooler winds from the W. Showers cover most areas
except the SW.
On Thurs. 28th, once again the LP lies to the NW and N of
Scotland. A secondary depression has moved towards Wales and travels
NE'wards across England. Winds are S in the east of the country.
Winds turn W and then turn NW in thewest of the country later.
Strongest winds in the NW and NE of Scotland. Heavy rain expected in
the SW of England with rain showers elsewhere except for Scotland.
On Fri. 29th, LP lies to the N and NW of Scotland and a small
depression comes into SW England which moves E along the Channel. Out
in the Atlantic, a HP area moves towards the SW of Ireland. Winds are
variable in the south but turn W or NW in the west of the country
later. Winds strongest over E and W Scotland. Heavy rain over
Scotland and also over SW and S England.
On Sat. 30th, a HP has developed over the British Isles with LP to
the W of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Winds are light over the
country, but S in the west of the country. Strongest winds are off W
Ireland. Showers expected over Scotland, otherwise dry.
On Sun. 31st, LP stretches from W/E across the top of Scotland and
HP covers England, Wales and S and SE Scotland. Winds are mostly
light, but W over Scotland and SW over Ireland. Strongest winds off E
Scotland. Showers over E Scotland and the North Sea coasts. Showers
over W Scotland. Fog is expected over SW Scotland, the Midlands, Wales
and SW England.

I'm off-line during November and the first few days of December, so
the usual posting of the 'British Isles Outlooks' will have to be
brought forward (if I've got time).

Cheers, Keith
