Hi Colin,

Most of the Alps received their first snowfall on Friday and Saturday.
Precipitation, over the French Alps, started on Friday with the freezing
level gradually lowering to 2000m on Friday evening. Snow is now lying
down to around 1200m, this webcam showing Les Arcs at 1800m -
http://www.lesarcs.com/webcam.htm
An ex-pat living in the Swiss Alps had this photo of his garden on
Saturday - http://www.hb9drv.ch/Laax%20in%20sno...2004%20002.JPG
use of snow chains and 4x4s was mandatory, many trees fell too due to the
heavy, wet nature of the snow.

Temperatures are already on the rise with 15 degC expected at 850hPa level
(1300m ish) early next week.

Joe
