From a very dark and gloomy Haytor (home of the raindrop),
.... if anyone is going to get a 'good old blow' it should be you Will! A good test for the new equipment. Martin. GFS is suggesting 80Kt convective gusts just off the SW http://weather.ou.edu/~oscarvdv/maps...usts_eur24.png -- regards, david (add 17 to waghorne to reply) |

At upland locations or where lee-wave motion
plays a part, and where instability breaks across the zone of strongest gradient (dry air intrusion aloft ... as pointed out by David), then such gusts could occur ... indeed, given *vigorous* instability, free-air at even higher levels can be brought down to the surface in isolated spots. This is why warnings etc., are so difficult to write in these situations - v Camborne and (and Watnall) soundings at 12Z show the dry air intrusion down to very low levels- http://weather.uwyo.edu/cgi-bin/soun...400&STNM=03808 The Aberystwyth profiler shows the jet, disturbances in the tropopause and slantwise and vertical (convective) circulations at lower levels (i think-have no expertise at interpreting these) http://mst.nerc.ac.uk/plots_mst_latest.html Anybody know the highest gust reported in the Sw y'day? -- regards, david (add 17 to waghorne to reply) |

WeatherOnline gives Mumbles and St Mary's 55 mph, Culdrose 52 mph, Plymouth 50 mph. Colin Youngs Brussels I saw a gust from Plymouth of 44 knots (9 group in synop) which is 52 mph not 50 mph ??? My max was 30 knots (36 mph). But then I get a lot of shelter from the SW despite altitude. Highest gust I recorded on Saturday was 33kt (38mph) but
this was beaten on both Friday with 38kt (44mph) and today, just an hour ago with a 35kt gust (40mph) during an intense rain shower that dropped 5.8mm in just 15 minutes. Nigel (Romsey, Hampshire). |
