David Gartrell writes: I've noticed there are quite a few newsgroups out there that are moderated, i.e. one or more people vet the posts before they make it onto the newsgroup. Regular contributors , after a while, have their posts accepted autoatically and other posts are vetted for their suitability before appearing. Isn't there something similar that could be employed here? I'm afraid not, at least not without a great deal of time and effort spent going through the "due process", by which time hopefully the flooding would only be a distant memory. Have a look on: http://www.usenet.org.uk/ and http://www.moderation.org.uk/ to get an idea of what would be involved. -- John Hall Weep not for little Leonie Abducted by a French Marquis! "David Gartrell" wrote I've noticed there are quite a few newsgroups out there that are moderated, ...snip Great idea, but who would find the time to look after such a busy newsgroup as this one? Jack People that have retired early. Seriously though, the trouble with moderated groups or forums is, they are open to moderator subjective abuse as well . In addition many are run by private companies to promote their own products. For me some moderators have a traffic-warden like mentality. Uksciweather even though unmoderated still is remarkable for the lack of bad language and good behaviour. Okay there may be some time-wasters ( ? ) but overall despite yeterdays debacle which happened on a heavily moderated forum as well, things surely aren't that bad on here . I think one problem is, being a weather group if the weather isn't doing that much people will tend to go OT and why not ? it's hopefully part of the general bonhomie of the group. Moderated groups tend to become "follow the party line or you're banned" that then becomes effectively very subjective censorship. Yes I agree with you Lawrence. USW is self moderated, people have self responsibility to post appropriate messages, and not to use bad language or too spam. In other words it is typically British. Of course, there are a few idiots, but I think that is a price worth paying, for having a generally open and objective ng. I think that if it was moderated, then there is a possibility that cronyism will come about with some contributors getting away with inappropriate messages. I'm an OU student, and I go into some of there internal newsgroups run by the student union, and they are very political correct, as can be expected, as most of the students running the internal newsgroups are either socialists or communists. Yet some students can get away with the most political incorrect statements, those students which are matey with the moderators. Yet if a student is not matey with the moderators, a ton of bricks fall upon them. So much for democracy with socialists! So in all, I think this ng should stay as it is. -- Joe Wolverhampton |
