I've noticed there are quite a few newsgroups out there that are moderated,
i.e. one or more people vet the posts before they make it onto the
newsgroup. Regular contributors , after a while, have their posts accepted
autoatically and other posts are vetted for their suitability before
appearing. Isn't there something similar that could be employed here?

There is a moderated newsgroup for UK weather called TWO! Enough said :-?

Cheers, Alastair.

what about abandoning Usnet and creating a forum, that way every member
would have to register and spam would be kept out, just a thought, I'm

You can't turn an unmoderated group into a moderated one. You'd have to
go through the process of getting a moderated group created.

Not immune sadly.
I recently got some spam on my gliding forum - for services totally
unconnected with gliding. (apres-glide perhaps!)

But your group host might be a useful replacement for mine which is now full
of pop-ups, etc
