Default Today's model interpretation (23/02/05)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Sunday. Issued 0611z,
23/02/05.

The models continue to show a northerly flow setting in on Sunday and for
the start of next week. There's still a chance of very cold air moving over
SE England on Sunday into Monday, but the GFS ensembles show that's by no
means certain. Temperatures should rise a couple of degrees above recent
values by Sunday, which could turn any showers back to rain. There's still
no sign of a breakdown in the models, with low pressure persisting near the
Azores.

ECMWF: http://64.246.48.81/pics/Recm1201.gif
A ridge covers Scotland and Northern Ireland, with easterlies and ENE'lies
elsewhere. The ridge sinks southwards at T+144, allowing less cold NW'lies
to affect the UK. A low deepens over Denmark at T+168, leaving the UK under
northerlies.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html
The MetO run shows light northerlies, NNW'lies and ENE'lies for the UK due
to a ridge across the British Isles. The ridge moves westwards at T+144 as a
trough crosses Scotland; winds are northerlies and NNW'lies for the UK.

GFS: http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/pslv_frame.htm
England, Wales and Northern Ireland lie under a ridge, with NW'lies for
Scotland and NE England. 850hPa temperatures vary from -11C over SE England
to -5C over NE Scotland. Low pressure moves over Denmark at T+144, dragging
a trough southwards over the UK. This is followed by a ridge on day 7, with
northerlies and NW'lies. Day 8 sees little change, with a ridge across much
of the UK. A col covers England and Wales on day 9, with northerlies
elsewhere, followed by easterlies and NW'lies on day 10 as high pressure
sinks SE'wards over Northern Ireland.
Ensembles: http://64.246.48.81/pics/MT8_London_ens.png
The ensembles show good agreement of sub -5C 850 air lingering over London
out to the 3rd March, with some uncertainty over the depth of the cold on
Sunday/Monday.

GEM: http://www.meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120.html
High pressure extends southwards from Greenland, with a ridge SE'wards over
the UK. Winds are ESE'lies over southern ENgland and Wales, NW'lies over
northern Scotland and light elsewhere. 850hPa temperatures vary from -6C
over East Anglia to -3C over Northern Ireland. Northerlies cover the UK at
T+144 with a low to the east, followed by westerlies for many areas on day 7
as low pressure deepens to the west of Norway.

GME/DWD:
http://www.wetter.com/home/img/sat/g...230000_120.gif
Easterlies cover England, Wales and Northern Ireland due to a ridge over
Scotland. The ridge moves SW'wards at T+144, introducting northerlies and
NW'lies for the UK. The northerlies strengthen at T+168 as the ridge moves
westwards and low pressure moves over southern Sweden.

JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html
The Japanese run shows a ridge moving SW'wards ober the UK, with northerlies
and NE'lies. 850hPa temperatures vary from -13C over SE England to -7C over
northern Scotland. A trough sinks southwards at T+144, resulting in
northerlies and NW'lies. There's more of the same on day 7, followed by cold
westerlies and NW'lies on day 8 as a low moves over Shetland.

NOGAPS: http://wetterzentrale.com/pics/Rngp1201.gif
Unavailable today.

GM CPTEC: http://www.cptec.inpe.br/prevnum/Global126_sx6_Gl.shtml
Northerlies and NE'lies cover the UK with a high centred to the west.

KMA: http://www.kma.go.kr/kma03/gif/g21nh_smsr_120.gif
The UK lies under moderate easterlies due to high pressure to the north.
