75 minutes of moderate snow with fairly large flakes has produced no
more accumulation - temperature 0.8C but RH at 89%. Don't know how the snow last night managed to accumulate on the roads at all! Looks to be more showers lined up across the Thames Estuary for later. -- Jonathan Stott Canterbury Weather: http://www.canterburyweather.co.uk/ |

Don't know how the snow last night managed to accumulate on the roads at all! This was the view looking up around 20 minutes ago he http://tinypic.com/1t7ztd The snow came in two showers. First was a 5 minute one which added a sprinkling of white to the lawn, before it swiftly melted afterwards (air temperature 1.1C at the end). Then there was a half hour shower, this time leading to a dusting on cars, grass and rooves. It even tried to settle on the soaking roads and pavements, but needless to say as soon as it stopped it melted on those. 10 minutes after it ended the snow's not melted on the grass, cars and rooves, although the air temperature's risen from 0.4C to 0.7. (WR refers to Leysdown, north Kent, 10m ASL). |

.uk... I know I'm getting boring but I'm sure most people are surprised it hasn't settled more! It's a theme that's cropped up on some Web based message boards as well. The only thing I can say for certain is that given heavy enough snow (of the big fluffy flake sort), it *will* settle, even if the roads are soaking wet after rain/melted snow. Until today the last time I saw that in action was the snow event in January 2004, which started with a few minutes of heavy rain which turned to heavy snow and promptly settled. Other than that, there's got to be an obvious reason why the snow's having such trouble settling in this spell. I'd be tempted to say it's the radiation absorbed during the day that's causing it to melt so quickly, but that wouldn't apply to snow falling early in the day. |
