That subject title looks like a tabloid headline to me ......... ;-)

To be accurate, it should read:

Early Warning of *possible* Heavy Snow Showers in the North

but then, such headlines aren't nearly as exciting. ;-)

I don't know what you mean ;-)

Given the cold air, 1000/500 thickness around 516dam in the far north
http://imkpc3.physik.uni-karlsruhe.de/pics/brack1a.gif
and instability to around 18000ft
http://www.unibas.ch/geo/mcr/3d/mete...mm22/NPKPP.htm there will be
heavy snow showers. The question is will they lead to disruption... hence
the warning.

It does, at least for high ground. The finalised charts have a similar break
away warm front

That chart reminds me of the olden days - polar troughs 'n all - and
as we are only two days away, hmmm...

I suppose the Met Office are anxious around some sort of liability for some
poor old dear slipping on slush whilst walking ten miles to her new
post-office (or casino). It is for them, as Alex Ferguson so graphically put
it "squeaky bum time". Of course under New Labour they'll probably be
presented with snow-flake targets to make sure that individual needs are met
thus offering choice with appropriate targeting.

You know that you're in a country that rarely receives snow when you get a
"Heavy Snow" warning for an event that *could* leave "Accumulations of
several cm" on the hills!
