Default [WR] Driech in the central Lowlands

I think it's been a few years since we've had such a driech day in the
central lowlands.
100% rh, fine light drizzle, dead calm, unchanging temps and vis' less than
500m with eerie twilight.
Driech being a Scots word for a combination of mist, murk, drizzle and
depressing grey weather.
Driech days seemed more prevalent when I was a lad, often either in the days
preceeding snowy weather or accompanying a thaw. The only thing missing is
the smell of coal fires drifting down from chimney pots.
I'm hoping history repeats itself and we can grab some of the snow that will
be around on Thursday.
Alex.

Seems to be a marked inversion around these parts too...
Wanlockhead, 1000ft higher and 25 or so miles from here appears to have
temp's 5บC higher and a fresh breeze?
Steve Loft: Is this the case? Or are you tinkering around with your
auto-station?
:-)

Driech was exactly how I described it this morning on my website too ALex
and it aint got much better round these parts at 1500 either.

I also recall the coal smoke as a lad and will be rekindling that smell in
about 2 hours when i get the fire on.

Paul at Brampton remarked about my high temp, and now come to think of
it, I do have a reason to suspect it may be incorrect. But we do have a
breeze.

I'll attempt to check the temperature, watch this space...

Hi Alex

Isn't it spelt 'dreich'?
Note for prospective users of the word, the ch is pronounced as the ch in
Mach.

You may well be right Karl.
But I was always taught; "I before E, except after C".
Not sure if the rule appleis here though.
Still dreich here, with more in the way of moderate rain now as opposed to
the mizzle earlier.

We lit up, the fire that is, at 14:00. Max temp today so far is 7.2ฐC
at 15:30, currently 6.8ฐC, with 11.8mm of rain and an average wind
speed of 0.9mph, NNE. Visibility has been no more than about 500m for
most of the day.

Pretty grim.

And it's usually preceded by the word "gie" with the "i" pronounced as
in "tide" :-)
