Never wise to make these statements Paul.
Especially when there's still 6 weeks to go.
There's more than enough half eaten shoes lying around the houses of usw
readers already, from those who took a similar gamble either last year or
earlier this year.
Only had one 12" fall here in the last 8 years, but i'm not fond of the
taste of slippers.

You set your standards high if you reckon only a foot or more of snow
counts as "decent". Here in lowland west Surrey, the deepest level snow
I've ever experienced was 18 inches in 1962-3, which was the total of
several falls in late December and early January. I can remember about
three or four other occasions in the last 40 years when there was close
to a foot, the last time being January, 1987. So even before global
warming really set in, it was something on the order of a once per
decade event here.

I have never recorded a foot of level snow. The best that Epping can offer
(since 1979) was 25cm on 9/10/13th Feb 1991 and 22cm on 12th December 1981.
Snow enthusiasts in this part of the world looking for 'deep, crisp and
even' snow will despair when they look at my snow data table
http://tinyurl.com/437ae

Even in the much discussed 1962/63 winter, living on the rural/urban fringe
of N.London (Enfield), the deepest I measured was about 10" (25cm) just
after Christmas 1962 - after that there was a very slow rotting/compaction
of the lying snow with a couple of modest 'top-ups'.
Having studied the equally renowned winter of 1947 I doubt if this area
managed 12" of level snow then - limited initial depth and several
interruptions by milder air.

All the best

If you're referring to the last deep snowfall here?
It was 26/27th February 2001, when we had around 18 inches of snowfall, and
many drifts over 6ft after a severe blizzard.
If you're referring to mass shoe eating episodes, those who had to forfeit
will probably wish to remain anonymous. But, unlike Paul, they didn't gamble
on a foot of snow, just a covering.

And the substantial fall here in late Feb. 2001, was probably the only 1
foot + fall here since possibly 1991, but more likely January 1987.
So I was wrong when I said once in eight years here. More likely once in the
last seventeen years.
This part of the central Lowlands received approx. 2 feet of level snow in
January 1987. It led to a week off school, the only time that happened here
in my days as a pupil. It wasn't just a South East thing, contrary to
popular belief.

There's a page on my website recollecting these two substantial falls:

Hi Paul

Only once, here - Jan'82. That was about 18".

I have a photo taken on a Sunday morning in January 1982, after it had been
snowing for about 3 days. I remember it as being fine and powdery snow. The
picture shows a channel my father had dug out down to the greenhouse at the
bottom of the garden. You can judge from it that there was possibly more
than 18" of level snow here in Worcester.

I also have a few photos showing ice floes on the River Severn in the City
taken around the same time.

I think apart from that, there was a very heavy snowfall in January 1986, I
remember deep snow drifts blocking many roads in Worcestershire. Uncertain
to the actual depth of level snow but it must have been approaching 12".

The last big snowfall was Feb 1991 when I measured 8" of level snow. Since
then we have had no more than the occasional light dusting.

Could it have been 1985 rather than 1986?
