Many areas have been dissapointed with this easterly over the past
week. It seemed that a repeat of 1991 was expected. However this was never going to happen. In 1991 what actually caused the snow was not just the Scandi high or the easterly wind. The main cause was a large pool of very cold air crossing central Europe. 850hpa temps were below -20C as it crossed the low countries. It picked up moister over the north sea and caused a local pressure drop. Even as it settle over England the 850hpa were still as low as -15. This easterly has lack the low temperatures and the cold pools. Simon Sheaf Sheffield South Yorkshire Lots of snow over nearby high ground still 1-2cm round here but nothing in the centres of sheffield or rotherham. |
