Yes John, it was the 15th March 1964. There had been previous snowfalls on t 6th and 7th of that month. Also snow covered the Downs on the 3rd and 4th April 1964 with about 7cm on Westerham Hill. There were several other sudden snowfalls such as the 14th April 1966 event with up to 15cm of snow and places such as Pole Hill in Kent blocked by snow bound traffic. Ian Currie. There was heavy snowfall in Bracknell on 4 Mar 1965, with a minimum of -10°C overnight. I was working there at the time. Later in the month (29th) the temperature reached 24°C, after an overnight min of 0°C. An interesting month. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |

There was heavy snowfall in Bracknell on 4 Mar 1965, with a
minimum of -10°C overnight. I was working there at the time. Later in the month (29th) the temperature reached 24°C, after an overnight min of 0°C. An interesting month. Heavy snow on the 4 Mar 1970 with 25 cms and drifts up to 2 feet deep. There were many other falls during this amazing month with 16 days of snow falling and 12 days snow lying. I recorded a total of 40 cms throughout the month. You would be hard pushed to get any of our Winter months to compete with that these days. Mind you it was an amazing Winter really with: Mean snow depth max fall date S/F S/L Nov 4.1c 20cms 11cms 28th 5 5 Dec 2.2c 48cms 22cms 19th 10 10 Jan 2.5c 32cms 16cms 8th 8 9 Feb 2.0c 55cms 16cms 17th 13 17 Mar 2.7c 40cms 25cms 4th 16 12 Apr 5.8c 10cms 7cms 8th 8 2 Ah, them were the days ![]() Weston Coyney weather station (North Midlands) 220 metres asl -- Graham |

I think that was the one that dumped 24 inches of level snow on Rushden, Northants, in four hours. The five-to-eight forecast that morning was for sunshine and isolated snow showers. It had been snowing since six-thirty and was estimated to be a foot deep at the time of the forecast! This wasn't a case of a difficult forecast - just a rank bad one. Graham Bracknell |
