Yesterday a chain of snow showers, induced by open sea at Gulf of
Finland, poured (is there a more approppriate word for solid precipitation ?) snow to coastal parts of the town, and at the entire southern coastline (up to 20 cm). Bad driving conditions but no serious accidents. Snow blocked the moving parts of tram tracks so in the evening tracks there were delays up to one hour. Yes this reminds me of another town on an lonely island... Elena, back home ps a photo of Helsinki main street in the evening http://www.helsinginsanomat.fi/tuore.../1076154588715 |

You could use the word 'dumped'. Nice pic of snowy street. Ah, trams!. Used
to have them in Reading, 50 years ago, and in London too. Now a few new tracks operating in parts of London and Manchester, but now a patch on the old double deckers from my childhood. Switching off nostalgic mode. -- Bernard Burton Wokingham, Berkshire, UK. Satellite images at: www.btinternet.com/~wokingham.weather/wwp.html "Elena Saltikoff" wrote in message ... That's a lovely image, all the trappings of our modern world shops,
lighting, cars and even tram set against such heavy snow that doesn't melt. I know it's daft, but wouldn't it be beautiful to see that here . It can happen looking at the latest GFS! I can see the easterly wind whipping up heavy snow showers from the Gulf of Catford and depositing them in Sydenham Road. Sava Center, Morrissons and Lidyls all having to put little sled type runners on their shopping trolleys. Mind you we've never really tested the Doner kebab under such conditions. I'm concerned that in temperatures like that they would (the high fat content) congeal immediatley with despratley sad scenarios of people sort of 'caught in time' found stuck to bus stops the next day. Imagine poor old Tudor having to junp start his Trombone! "Elena Saltikoff" wrote in message ... Maybe the answer was in The Times on Friday. According to 'A Correspondent' 'Much of Britain saw its first snow of the winter with downfalls reported as far south as Oxfordshire and Milton Keynes' I am reluctant to wish snow enthusiasts some splendid downfalls this winter.......but there again.....;-) All the best -- George in foggy Epping, West Essex (107m asl) www.eppingweather.co.uk www.winter1947.co.uk |

Certainly not enough snow here in recent winters to cause jammed points as in Helsinki. Most recent weather-related tram incident in Brussels was on 21st October after the thunderstorm with heavy rain and strong winds overnight. A tram ran into the back of another going uphill (!) and several passengers were hurt. Cause was probably that the second tram couldn't brake in time when the first one stopped. The rain and wind had brought down a lot of leaves which became ground into a pulp and made the tracks greasy so that the wheels lost grip. Colin Youngs Brussels |

I wouldn't go anywhere near a trombone in conditions like that. Quite apart from the mouthpiece freezing to your lips it would play dreadfully flat. And the slide lubricant (mostly a water spray) would get a bit "stiff", shall we say. Tudor Hughes. |
